Portrait of John Singer Sargent taken by Alvin Langdon Coburn, a key figure in the development of American pictorialism, and titled in Coburn's hand on the matting. This photogravure print is a proof before letters, with no printed plate number or facsimile signature. It was taken in Chelsea in January 1907 for the book "Men of Mark" (1913). - American by nationality, Sargent was born in Florence and lived most of his life in London. He is best known for his portraits of Edwardian society figures, and is considered the most important American portraitist of his day. Sargent created about nine hundred oil paintings and two thousand watercolour paintings, and travelled continental Europe, the Middle East and the United States. - In excellent condition. - From the collection of Roy A.
