Bound tight to the gutter but readable. Some marginalia slightly cropped. In 19th century good but rubbed half calf and marbled boards, spine relaid.This copy comes with an excellent provenance. The dated ownership inscription of James Bindley (1737-1818) 'Book collector - 'father' of Society of Antiquaries - formed a valuable collection of rare books - which was sold by auction after his death'.(ODNB). Purchased, presumably by Heber, with Biblioteca Heberiana stamp. Sold in the Heber sale (lot 5553) and with m/s note of the purchaser ?F.G.W. noting the date of the sale and the price paid (1/-!). No mention in Heber catalogue of Walton connection. Tipped in m/s note 'The Heroe of Lorenzo with Iz. Walton's "to the reader". This book was unknown to all biographers of Walton, including the late Mr William Pickering, until Dr. Bliss discovered a copy in a volume of tracts and presented it to Mr Pickering, who in his letter acknowledging the present, said "the book is very interesting to me who hath for forty years combed for every scrap that would illustrate Walton's life and writings. This book I had not the remotest knowledge of, and do value etc". The copy spoken of was subsequently purchased at Mr Pickering's sale for the Bodleian Library. It fetched £5.5.0. Vide Notes and Queries Vol 11, 1855.' And in a different hand ' there is a most rare little volume, entitled the "Heroe of Lorenzo", this contains a preface signed I.W. .who would not recognize the style of honest Izaak in such sentences as these."In a retyrement of that Learned Knight (by reason of .etc etc)'' Leisure Hour 1874. See also page 585/6 of the 1929 edition of the Compleat Angler. Ownership inscription of Henry H. Gibbs St Dunstan's 1878 of Aldenham House Libraries. With the bookplate of the first Baron Aldenham on rear paste-down. 'Henry Gibbs (was) a noted bibliophile with a celebrated library and Hispanist aficionado.his eldest son was also a keen bibliophile and inherited the family library which was sold at auction in 1937' (Hispanist anglosphere) The listing of this title in the 1888 library catalogue of St Dunstan's Regents Park and Aldenham House cites 'Preface by I(zaak) W(alton) 1 vol 24mo 4.5 x 2.5 London 1652 half calf r.e.
