Aggiungi al carrelloNo Binding. Condizione: As Described. No Jacket. James Harfield Kernot after J. Skene after John Sell Cotman (illustratore). A beautiful print of an engraving of 'Glen Coe', drawn by John Sell Cotman from a sketch by J. Skene, engraved by James Harfield Kernot. This print, while of uncertain provenance, was possibly taken from a copy of Waverley Novels (Abbotsford Edition) by Walter Scott, published in Edinburgh and London: Robert Cadell, Houlston & Stoneman, 1842-1847. Mounted and matted with white and antique white acid-free card, measuring 8" x 6" (20.3cm x 15.2cm) with a window size of around 6" x 4" and comes in a cellophane bag. Minor marking and scuffing to print, with some foxing around margins, but quite clean for age. This would make for a lovely gift and may appeal to those interested in Scotland, coastlines, Sir Walter Scott, topography and the work of Cotman, Skene or Kernot. Circa 1842-1847. n.

The author explores the complex interplay of various groups ââ â Picts, Scots, Britons, and later, Angles and Saxons ââ â who fought for control of the land. You'll learn about the Pictish Chronicle, the oldest of the chronicles we have, and discover its insights into the reign of the Pictish kings. The author also sheds light on the arrival of the Scots from Ireland, their establishment in Dalriada, and the rise of Kenneth mac Alpin, who founded the Scottish dynasty in the 9th century. The book also explores the evolution of the kingdom's boundaries and how the Scottish monarchy gradually expanded its influence over the various regions. The author examines the changing laws of succession and the shifting power dynamics within the land, revealing a fascinating tapestry of political intrigue and cultural interaction. This book offers a unique perspective on the formation of the Scottish nation, illuminating the complex historical events that shaped the identity of Scotland. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrelloFull-Leather. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No dj. First Edition. First collection of the laws of Scotland, this copy without the "De Verborum Significatione" or the final "Catralogue of the Buikes", the last leaf is the Table of Moveable Feasts. The first three leaves are missing, the frontis text facing the title page, the contents page and the privelege page. It starts with the dedication page "Serenissimo et Invictissimo Principi, Jacobo Sexto". It is noted that even copies held in the National Library are without title pages. The Kings and Queens Genealogy chart is also missing from that section. The text is age tanned with undulating pages as is typical of tomes this age. Generally in good order though, with the odd defect, one torn hole a couple of inches long, an ink smudge or two, generally this copy has been curated in a proper library its whole life. Private bookplate "D D Ormond", de-accessioned from Stirling Library (!). The text block is tightly bound, the last couple of pages hanging by a single thread. The binding looks to be part original, but could be a later binding of course, it is certainly ancient. Full leather, the spine panel is unbroken with four raised bands and "Skene Laws of Scotland" in gilt. Both boards are detached but present, with a very aged and bobbled and cracked texture, appealing in itself for its antiquity. The leather of the spine was once inserted underneath the leather of the boards, indicating a re-back at some point, though this has obviously long since failed. Dedication, blank, Fol 1, 162pp, blank, Fol 1, 179pp, Table (unpaginated 42pp), blank(2), 14pp, 1pp, blank(3). Size: 4to.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. A first edition of the early legislative record of the Scots Parliament, starting with those Laws and Acts begun by James the First, and followed by his successors. Also included is a first edition of Skene's De Verborum Significatione, his work on ancient Scottish Legal terms, effectively acting as an early dictionary on Scottish Law. Of Skene himself, he was a noted prosecutor and judge. ESTC suggests that one of the title pages is generally missing, which is the case of the lacking engraved additional title. There is an armorial bookplate for Dowden Memorial Library, of St. Mary's Cathedral, in Edinburgh, and the front free endpaper has another plate for an individual simply entitled Airth. The volume has been rebacked, with the board corners repaired. The additional engraved title page is lacking, as are blank leaves e1 and 2D4, the folding plate, and the tables/index at the rear of the volume is lacking E6, G2 (a blank?), M2, M5, and T1-T4. The main text of the volume is otherwise complete. Two works finely bound in folio, (4 of 5)+162; 178+(88 of 96) leaves This volume is in very good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the binding. The title leaf is torn at the head, with a loss to the headpiece. There is damp mottling and consequent fraying to the upper inner corners of several leaves at the front of the volume, and some fraying to the leaves at the front and rear. There is some damp staining throughout, mostly marginal, but heavier to the last few quires.
