Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal Wraps. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. Very good in mauve and black card wrappers with flat spine. Covers nice and clean, with just some light marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling. Rear cover has slight crease to top edge and light crease to bottom corner, affecting the last…few pages. Contents very good and clean, although the paper stock is of poorer quality than earlier issues of Encounter, and is slightly tanned. 255mm x 185mm. 96 pages plus two pages of adverts on the inside covers. ***This issue includes first publication of a four page short story by Ian McEwan entitled 'Without Blood'. ***'Ian McEwan's first book of stories, "First Love, Last Rites", has recently been published by Jonathan Cape' [Quote taken from Author Notes section at the back of the magazine] ***'The collection ["First Love, Last Rites"] is McEwan's first published work and was regarded by the author [along with his second collection of short stories, "In Between the Sheets"] as an opportunity to experiment and find his voice as a writer. In an interview with Christopher Ricks in 1979, McEwan commented, "They were a kind of laboratory for me. They allowed me to try out different things, to discover myself as a writer." As a piece of work that portrays McEwan, the writer, at his youngest, it is perhaps fitting that the dominant theme is that of adolescence, of the blurry and perilous divide between childhood and adulthood; in addition themes of sex, perversion, and the grotesque in its many forms feature throughout. [Quote from Wiki about McEwan's first book of short stories] ***A very good copy of this famous literary magazine, which includes an early publication by Ian McEwan. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal Blue Hardbacks. Condizione: Very Good Plus. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good Plus. New Edition. 1984. 11 volume set (complete) with the original clear plastic wrappers. New Edition to which are added indexes and remains of the lost charter rolls. Publisher's blue binding with gilt titles to spines. Books and wrappers… all in excellent condition. Pages browning slightly. Contents clean with no inscriptions. PLEASE NOTE: very heavy set - will require some extra postage for non-UK customers. "THE twelve rolls and one book which are printed in this volume contain all that remains of the Register of the Great Seal of Scotland prior to 1424, the date of James I's release from captivity. They were printed in 1814 under the authority of the Royal Commissioners, in a folio volume, edited by Thomas Thomson. The "Domesday type" was employed, reproducing in conventional forms the contractions of the original MS. This edition deserves its high reputation; it is a marvel of accuracy, typographically and otherwise. In 1878 the publication in an abridged form and in octavo of the Great Seal Register from 1424 downwards was undertaken under the direction of the Deputy Clerk Register of Scotland; nine volumes have appeared, bringing the record down to 1659. The first of these was published in 1882, edited by Mr. J. Balfour Paul (now Sir J. B. Paul, Lyon King of Arms). The following is extracted from his preface:- "The folio published in 1814 will be reckoned the first volume of the work, and this the second. Hereafter the first might with advantage be reprinted in the same form as this and the volumes that are to follow, extending the contractions which so frequently embarrass the reader, and adding to it, as an Appendix, a revised edition of the index of missing charters published by Mr. William Robertson in 1798, so as to give as complete a view as is now possible of the contents of the Register from 1306 to 1424, as it stood about the beginning of the seventeenth century." The present volume carries out the project thus indicated with a little enlargement. The text is a reprint of the 1814 edition, revised from the MS. record, with contractions extended, use of capital letters modernized, and punctuation on a uniform system. The Appendices give what is known of the lost rolls.".

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. 8vo. Dark blue cloth with red spine lettering. vii, 146pp. Very good. Tight and internally fine, the only flaw a lightly-sunned spine; lacks dust jacket. "Life" magazine's renowned editor Henry R. Luce introduces these ten essays, first published in its pages and here the first book edition. The other five contributor…s are John W. Gardner, Clinton Rossiter, Albert Wohlstetter, James Reston and Walter Lippmann. Contributor's copy, the personal copy of Governor Stevenson (1900-65) sent him by the publisher and hails from the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81). Stevenson's essay "Extend Our Vision. to All Mankind" appears on pages 21-35. He folds down the first corner and apparently even reviewed his own essay, for several pencils rules (his typical marking) appear in its margins. Uncommon and a unique family copy.

Aggiungi al carrelloTwo volume set featuring full twelve month run for 1880 of The Atlantic Monthly. Each hardcover, H 24.5cm x L 16.25cm, uniformly bound in half-leather bindings - black leather spines and black cloth boards with black leather corners; both volumes with bindery tickets "Keim, Roesli & Co., | Book Binders | and | Blank Book Manf. |… 314 Olive St., St. Louis." on front pastedown of XLV and on rear pastedown of XLVI. Bindings are likely quite contemporary to the volumes as Keim, Roesli & Company is listed in an 1879 St. Louis city directory. Spines decorated with four slightly raised bands and gilt stamping with latter having some flaking loss but otherwise still bright; both volumes have slender shallow leather loss at both their lower and upper front and rear joints but bindings remain firm. Edges toned with a few small stains; past owner's name in pencil at top of each volumes' page 1; mild toning and occasional light foxing to interior leaves. VOLUME XLV JAN.-JUNE 1880: i-iv, 1-860 pages; wide swath of strong surface abrasion to front board with slender area of similar abrasion at fore-edge area of rear board; cloth loss at board edges too with rear board's bottom leather corner worn; pages 149-182 have shallow dings/short tears at their bottom margins. VOLUME XLVI JULY-DEC. 1880: i-iv, 1-868 pages; nicks to spine head; faint dark mottling to rear board; strong slender abrasion at both boards' bottom leather corners. Still an attractive set despite first volume's marred exterior cloth. Whereas bookseller tickets for 19th century St. Louis are not too unusual, contemporary bookbindery tickets are quite uncommon. The two volumes feature contributions by Mark Twain, William Dean Howells, Robert Louis Stevenson, Thomas Bailey Aldrich, John Burroughs, John Greenleaf Whittier, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes [Sr], among many others. Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 6.5 pounds (2.94 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.

Other works from the 1860s include *Romola* by George Eliot, *Wives and Daughters* by Elizabeth Gaskell, *Armadale* by Wilkie Collins, *Unto This Last* by John Ruskin, *Culture and Anarchy* by Matthew Arnold, and Tennyson's "Tithonus." Works from the 1870s and 1880s include *The Adventures of Harry Richmond* by George Meredith, *Daisy Miller* and *Washington Square* by Henry James, *The Pavilion on the Links* and *The Merry Men* by Robert Louis Stevenson, and the first 29 chapters of *Far from the Madding Crowd* by Thomas Hardy. *J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement* was first published anonymously by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1884, and *The White Company* first appeared under his name in 1891-92. *The Lagoon* by Joseph Conrad appeared in 1897. *Cornhill* maintained its high reputation up through the 1930s. Works from the early 20th Century include poems and prose pieces by Robert Bridges, Thomas Hardy, W.B. Yeats, Ford Madox Ford, and Katherine Tynan. The magazine also featured illustrations by George du Maurier, Frederic Leighton, Edwin Landseer, John Everett Millais, and other leading artists. Most were engraved on wood by the Brothers Dalziel, and include numerous full-page and folding plates. Most volumes from 1860 to 1901 are bound in contemporary publisher's cloth (with some rebound in full cloth), volumes from 1902 to 1924 are rebound in full cloth (most with the original wrappers included), and single monthly issues from the 1920s and early 1930s are in the original printed wrappers. Ex-library set with bookplates, most 19th Century volumes with a small embossed stamp on the title pages and a perforated stamp on the plates. The earliest volumes are chipped at the spines and edges, a few with split spines and detached boards, else overall a good set of bound volumes; the single issues in wraps are unmarked and very good or better. A very nice assemblage of notable 19th Century literature and illustrations.
