Extensive penciled and penned inscriptions by three previous owners at endpapers, some similar markings at rear pastedown. Cracking to front pastedown, stitches showing, but still remarkably sturdy. The present work comprises the theatrical comedies of North African playwright of the Roman Republic Publius Terentius Afer (c. 195/185 - c. 159 B.C.E.); adapted for the use of schools by Church of England clergyman John Stirling. Thus, a First Edition Thus; all text in Latin. All copies of early printings are extremely scarce, but this one appears nowhere else. This edition brags on six alleged improvements, words being placed "in their natural order," omission of words consigned to ellipsis, words of two or greater syllables are marked with accents to aid in pronunciation, "remarkable phrases" are reprised at book's end, an alphabetical vocabulary is included, themes of verbs and their conjugation are rendered.
