The covers are still a little bright with fancy black borders and gilt titles. The spine ends have very minor lighter colored fraying. The endpaper is seperated at the front interior hinge and appears as a light hinge crack but only goes through the endpaper. Light age toning to endpapers. No foxing or ageing marks to interior. A nice collector's copy. Rare. Size: Square 12mo.

Edition not stated, but apparently adapted by John Stirling for the use of and in schools. Bound sturdily in full leather, rubbed and abraded, a bit scuffed at spine head. Heavy rubbing to, scuffing of tips, edges. Five raised bands to spine, no lettering there. Extensive penciled and penned inscriptions by three previous owners at endpapers, some similar markings at rear pastedown. Cracking to front pastedown, stitches showing, but still remarkably sturdy. The present work comprises the theatrical comedies of North African playwright of the Roman Republic Publius Terentius Afer (c. 195/185 - c. 159 B.C.E.); adapted for the use of schools by Church of England clergyman John Stirling. Thus, a First Edition Thus; all text in Latin. All copies of early printings are extremely scarce, but this one appears nowhere else. This edition brags on six alleged improvements, words being placed "in their natural order," omission of words consigned to ellipsis, words of two or greater syllables are marked with accents to aid in pronunciation, "remarkable phrases" are reprised at book's end, an alphabetical vocabulary is included, themes of verbs and their conjugation are rendered. Frontis matter, 2-429 [3] pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
