Several years later, Frederick Douglass, taken by Bowen's "spiritual sense," augured that the Gammon Theological Seminary professor would "touch the main spring of the moral universe. Truth is the saving power of the world, preach it and you bless yourself, your race and the world." On October 21, 1895, four weeks after Booker T. Washington's clairvoyant address at the Cotton States and International Exposition (Atlanta), Bowen delivered "An Appeal to the King."
