First edition. ---- Bowen, a Louisiana slave, was purchased from bondage by his father, Edward, at the age of three. gifted and ambitious, Bowen pursued the Methodist Episcopal ministry and an education, earning, in 1887, a doctorate from Boston University. Several years later, Frederick Douglass, taken by Bowen's "spiritual sense," augured that the Gammon Theological Seminary professor would "touch the main spring of the moral universe. Truth is the saving power of the world, preach it and you bless yourself, your race and the world." On October 21, 1895, four weeks after Booker T. Washington's clairvoyant address at the Cotton States and International Exposition (Atlanta), Bowen delivered "An Appeal to the King." "Finally, oh king! a new Negro has come upon the stage of action," Bowen blazoned, decades before the Harlem Renaissance theoretician Alain Locke conceived a Black spiritual Coming of Age. "His eye is fixed upon his broken but hanging chain: his brow is knit in deep thought.
