Hardcover. Condizione: Good+. Presumed first edition (SD; NAP) . Hardcover, 4x6 inches, original full tan leather, leather spine label, 306 pp. Good+. Corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there, open cracks along length of front and rear joints, 1/4 inch chip off lower corner of spine label. Internally, foxed throughout, a bit of a wave to textblock, light tan stain on half the rear endpaper which affects approximately 20 to 30 adjoining leaves, otherwise tight, clean and unmarked. Consists of biographical preface in which it is noted that Mrs Patten was daughter of Rev Eleazer Wheelock, founder and president of Dartmouth College and was taught by sisters of Jonathan Edwards, followed by the letters, by Mrs Patten and others, which, sadly seem to be in no particular order, and extend from ca. 1764 through 1844. Most deal with religious and family matters, and are an interesting glimpse into conservative New England religious thought. A few concern other events, such as an account of the Battle of Lexington-Concord and shelling of Roxbury, Massachusetts, a storm at sea, in which items purchsed in England for Dartmouth are lost, a major fire in Hartford, notices of people moving west, and an undated essay, "The Grave Yard" about a funeral. History; Americana; biography; American Revolution.
