Eastern Shore, Chesapeake. From the opening paragraph, "In Hans Christian Andersen's story, the exalted Counselor Knapp of Copenhagen puts on "the galoshes of happiness," and steps out into the middle ages. The average American of today, who abides serenely in the safer obscurity of private station, can do his spiriting as gently by buying a ticket for the Eastern Shore on the steamboat dock in Baltimore, and taking a hypnotic excursion to Choptank River on a moonlight night in October."
