Early Roman Laws, A Companion Volume to Pharr's Edition of the Theodosian Code Johnson, Allan Chester, Paul Robinson Coleman-Norton and Frank Card Bourne. Clyde Pharr, General Editor. Ancient Roman Statutes: A Translation with Introduction, Commentary, Glossary, and Index. Originally…published: Austin: University of Texas Press, 1961. xxxi, 290 pp. 9" x 13." Reprinted 2003, 2012 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584772910; ISBN-10: 1584772913. Hardcover. New. $150. * Translated and chronologically arranged, this collection of Roman laws is drawn from Bruns's Fontes Iuris Romani Antiqui, Girard's Textes de Droit Romain and Riccobono's Fontes Iuris Romani Antejustiani. Laws gathered from other secondary sources, such as the writings of ancient editions of inscriptions and of papyri by modern scholars, are also included. This volume is Volume II of The Corpus of Roman Law (Corpus Juris Romani), General Editor, Clyde Pharr. "The bulk of the texts are taken from the great source books: Bruns' Fontes, Girard's Textes, and Riccobono's FIRA. These collections were compiled very much "in usum scholarum," without translation, the texts themselves laden with the apparatus of textual criticism, and all comment in Latin. The present translation therefore is much to be welcomed, for there are many lawyers, historians and others, who, without being specialists in this field, may expect to find great value in the collection. (.) Political, social and economic historians will find this volume a mine of varied and valuable information." --David Yale, Yale Law Journal 71 (1961-1962) 1370, 1374. Allan Chester Johnson (1881-1955) was West Professor of Classics, Princeton University. Among his works are An Economic Survey of Ancient Rome (1933-1940). He was co-author with Paul Robinson Coleman-Norton of Studies in Roman Economic and Social History (1951). Paul Robinson Coleman-Norton was a Rhodes Scholar and Professor of Latin, Princeton University. He was the author of Roman State & Christian Church: A Collection of Legal Documents to A.D. 535 (1966) and co-author with Allan Chester Johnson of Studies in Roman Economic and Social History (1951). Frank Card Bourne was a Professor of Classics, Princeton University.
