Fourth printing (as stated upon copyright page) WITH PRESIDENT LYNDON JOHNSON INSCRIPTION. [8], 273 pages. Hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 14.5cm. Lacks dust jacket. Reddish-orange cloth; black and gilt lettering to spine with gilt lettering to front board; light bumping to spine head and at front board's bottom fore-edge corner. Faint impression of reversed type also on half-title as if some sheet with slightly transferable ink had been laid-down atop; also on half-title page is three-line ink inscription "To Paul Rogers - | with best wishes, | Lyndon B Johnson" which is quite likely the handwriting of LBJ's aide Bruce Thomas as "with best wishes" is the common generic greeting for most known secretarial copies of this book; the Johnson signature is all conjoined in one continuous ink flow and is without a period after the middle initial; impression of the handwriting can be felt on the half-title verso. Interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding retains some crispness. Else a near fine copy. Congressman Paul G. Rogers (1921-2008) graduated from the University of Florida in 1942 and, after World War II service, earned a law degree at the University of Florida in 1948. Entering private practice in Palm Beach, Florida and serving on the board of directors for Merck & Co. and Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York, Democrat Paul Rogers won a special election to fill the House seat held by his late father, U.S. Representative Dwight L. Rogers (1886-1954), a five term Congressman serving Florida's 6th district from January 1945 until his passing in December 1954. Paul Rogers went on to be elected to a total of twelve terms to the U.S. House of Representatives serving from January 1955 to January 1979. Rogers specialized in environmental and health-care legislation earning the moniker "Mr. Health" and was commemorated as the namesake of the federal courthouse in West Palm Beach and for the National Institutes of Health's main campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The book was acquired directly from the Paul and Rebecca Rogers estate.

Aggiungi al carrelloThe present item is a genuine signature. It has been compared with a number of examples from the 1950s, including one from the same year of 1951, all of which differ, and Johnson is not known to have used an autopen until he became president (in 1968 it was dubbed 'The Robot That Sits In For The President' by the National Enquirer). 1p, 4to. On a leaf of wove paper, with US government American eagle watermark. In fair condition, lightly aged, and folded twice for postage. There is some light wear to the left of the signature, having a negligible effect on its final uptick. Addressed to 'Mrs. Earl Middleton / 1714 Cromwell Hill / Austin, Texas'. The significance of Gravesend in Kent to the United States lies in the fact that this is where Pocahontas died and St George's is where she is buried (though the actual location has not been known since the church was rebuilt following a fire in the nineteenth century). The letter reads: 'My dear Friend: / This is just a note to thank you for your letter telling me of the forthcoming visit in this country of the Rector of St. George's Church at Gravesend. / While it is impossible to tell at this time what will be the schedule of final business before the adjournment of Congress, it would be a real pleasure for me to meet the Rector if I have the opportunity when he comes through Washington. / With best wishes, I am / Sincerely, / [autograph signature] Lyndon B Johnson / [typed] Lyndon B. Johnson'. See Image.
