Johnson was an Atlantic City politician and crime boss, notably played (as the thinly veiled Enoch M. ?Nucky? Thompson) by Steve Buscemi in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. In an interesting twist of fate, around this time Fitzgerald Auditorium was purchased by Leroy ?Pop? Williams, who transformed it into Club Harlem, which would go on to become a legendary club for Black jazz performers. An interesting ticket for two additional reasons: 1.) According to a website ran by the Atlantic City Public Library, "Pop" and his son Cliff purchased the auditorium in 1935; and 2.) In 1936, September 16 fell on a Wednesday; the 16th was a Thursday in 1932 and 1937. A curious little piece of Atlantic City history.
