This book reveals the true identity of Junius, a celebrated, yet mysterious figure who penned scathing letters in 18th century England. The author analyzes 150-200 letters, concluding that William Henry Cavendish Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, was the man behind the pseudonym. This book anchors its claims in an extensive examination of the letters' content, identifying the Duke's personal motivations and grievances as the driving force behind Junius's attacks on prominent politicians. By placing these letters in their historical context, the author invites readers to reassess a pivotal period in British history, challenging conventional wisdom and shedding new light on the motivations of a man who audaciously wielded his pen to challenge authority. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a series of letters written by "Junius" in the 18th century. The author claims a young aristocrat likely penned the letters. The author supports this claim by demonstrating the letters' primary concern was the restoration of an estate to the Duke of Portland, an aristocrat who had incurred the ire of the then-reigning monarch. The letters are dripping with contempt and animosity towards the aristocracy, and this study suggests the personal nature of the attacks likely stems from some unknown slight or insult suffered by the author at the hands of the aristocracy. Despite the inquiries of historians and scholars, Junius' true identity remains unknown. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

[JOHNSTON, Andrew Gregory]. Letters to a Nobleman, Proving a Late Prime Minister to Have Been Junius; And Developing the Secret Motives Which Induced Him to Write under That and Other Signatures. With An Appendix, Containing a Celebrated Case Published by Almon, in 1768. London: Printed for Messrs. Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1816. xv, 195, 55pp. 2 folding tables. Appendix with separate title page. ALS laid in. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Very good. A thorough, if misguided, attempt to establish that former Prime Minister William Henry Cavendish Bentwick, duke of Portland, was the pseudonymous political pamphleteer Junius. The accusation was first made in response to his public quarrel with the duke of Grafton, but was soon dismissed. Bentick's death in 1809 renewed public curiosity in the matter, hence the present work. Johnston grounds his argument in that fact that Junius seems to have been unduly concerned with the questionable transfer of land from the duke of Portland to Sir James Lowther, but the DNB dismisses the claim as "absurd." The appendix reprints Almon's 1768 publication of that land transfer case. The folding tables, present here, are usually lacking. The ALS laid in is a presentation letter from a R. Ranking to the noted London legal writer Francis Const.
