Brewing beer has a long tradition with the Zulus, the largest ethnic group of South Africa. The beverage was traditionally prepared by women at home in ornate ceramic vessels specially made for this purpose. This book aims to present the rich palette of styles of these vessels in all their beauty and to save them from being forgotten. The colorful history of the Zulus since the early nineteenth century, including the violent racial segregation in recent years, accompanied a golden age of traditional arts and crafts that served as both a bestower of identity and provided a link to their ancestry. In the Zulu-speaking region there is a wealth of forms and decorative elements that is unprecedented in the ceramic of South Africa. This current publication documents this influence of colonial politics and of the subsequent apartheid laws on style and prevalence of the popular beer vessels.

Zwar gibt es viele Studien zu afrikanischer Keramik, profunde Arbeiten, die einzelne Regionen untersuchen, sind jedoch nicht darunter. Dies ist insofern überraschend, da Tongefäße ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des täglichen Lebens waren und Einblick in viele Aspekte lokaler Kultur und sozialen Wandels vermitteln.Die bewegte Geschichte der Zulu seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert, einschließlich ihrer gewaltsamen Rassentrennung in jüngerer Zeit, ging mit einer Blütezeit des traditionellen Kunsthandwerks einher. Es diente als Identitätsstifter und wurde mit den Ahnen in Verbindung gebracht. Im Sprachgebiet der Zulu gibt es einen Reichtum an Formen und dekorativen Elementen, der in der Keramik Südafrikas beispiellos ist. Auch der Einfluss der Politik der Kolonialzeit und der folgenden Apartheidgesetze auf Stil und Verbreitung der volkstümlichen Biergefäße werden in der vorliegenden Publikation dokumentiert.

Neuware - Während in der westlichen Welt die Puppe ein Spielzeug für Kinder ist, sieht man einmal von der Sammelleidenschaft einiger erwachsener Menschen ab, so gehört die Puppe im südlichen Afrika zum Kulturgut eines Stammes. Sie ist kein Spielzeug, sondern ein Objekt, das mit rituellen, sozialen und religiösen Inhalten einer Gemeinschaft beladen ist. Auch für heilende Zwecke werden Puppen manchmal eingesetzt. Zu ihrer Herstellung werden die unterschiedlichsten Materialien verwendet. Die Puppen dieser Sammlung stellen etwas Neuartiges dar: sie basieren zwar auf traditionellen Prototypen, waren aber zum Verkauf bestimmt. Sie stammen aus einem Zulu-Haushalt in Msinga, einem Stammesgebiet in der früheren Provinz KwaZulu-Natal, an der Ostküste Südafrikas. Sie wurden dort von einer Gruppe von Frauen angefertigt. Bis auf die wenigen älteren Objekte entstanden sie in den Jahren zwischen 1987 und 1994. Um den Abstand zwischen ihnen selbst und den Käufern zu überbrücken, waren die Frauen bestrebt, alle Einzelheiten ihrer eigenen Lebensweise und der ihrer Mütter in diesen Objekten wiederzugeben. Damit stehen diese Puppen für einen Endpunkt einer agrarisch geprägten Landbevölkerung und der Entwicklung hin zu einer modernen Industrie-Gesellschaft in Südafrika. Der Autor hat in vielen Gesprächen mit den Frauen des Stammes die Bedeutung und die Inhalte dieser Sammlung im Einzelnen festgehalten.
