Paperback. Condizione: Good. Yes Minister - Vol One (1981) by Jonathan Lynn and Antony Jay ? BBC Before The Thick of It , before spin doctors acquired mobile phones, and long before anybody thought government departments might be improved by giving everyone a PowerPoint presentation and a diversity of consultants, there was Yes Minister ? a wonderfully dry examination of British government in which absolutely everyone is working very hard to ensure that as little as possible actually happens. Written by Jonathan Lynn and Antony Jay, this first volume brings the gloriously obstructive world of Jim Hacker MP, Sir Humphrey Appleby and Bernard Woolley from the television screen onto the printed page. Hacker has finally achieved what every ambitious politician supposedly dreams of: ministerial office. Unfortunately, he rapidly discovers that being a minister does not necessarily mean being allowed to run his own department. Standing between Hacker and anything resembling decisive action is Sir Humphrey Appleby, the magnificently polished Permanent Secretary whose principal skill is explaining why the minister?s latest perfectly reasonable idea is administratively impossible, politically dangerous, financially irresponsible, constitutionally dubious and, most importantly, not the way things have traditionally been done. Sir Humphrey is, of course, never openly disobedient. That would be terribly improper. Instead, inconvenient proposals are referred to committees, discussed with interested departments, subjected to reviews, reconsidered in light of emerging circumstances and eventually buried somewhere beneath a memorandum entitled Preliminary Considerations Concerning Possible Future Action . Bernard Woolley occupies the dangerous territory between the two men, attempting to serve his minister while simultaneously remembering that his actual career depends upon the Civil Service. His contributions frequently involve correcting someone?s grammar while the machinery of government quietly catches fire around him. Presented in diary-style form, Yes Minister - Vol One expands upon the television series with additional observations, memoranda and bureaucratic absurdities that make the whole thing feel alarmingly plausible. The joke, of course, is that the politicians think they run the country, the civil servants know that they run the country, and the public occasionally gets invited to vote so everyone can maintain the illusion. The humour is clever rather than frantic, relying on elaborate language, carefully constructed misunderstandings and the eternal battle between political ambition and administrative survival. Sir Humphrey?s spectacularly complicated sentences remain particularly impressive examples of how the English language can be used to say almost nothing while occupying several minutes and sounding extremely important. Published by the BBC in 1981, this is an excellent little slice of British political comedy from an age when government scandals involved expense accounts, awkward parliamentary questions and ministers accidentally telling the truth. This copy is in Good condition , meaning it has survived more than four decades of governments, reorganisations, policy initiatives and efficiency drives without requiring the establishment of an independent review committee. Sold by Crappy Old Books , where we believe old books deserve another term in office, regardless of whether anyone remembers voting for them. ISBN: 0563179341 THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. Paperback. Condizione: Good. Yes Minister, Vol. 2 (1982) by Jonathan Lynn & Antony Jay ? Condition: Good (Crappy Old Books) In the great game of British politics, few things have been as entertaining?or as terrifyingly accurate?as Yes Minister . Vol. 2 (BBC, 1982, ISBN: 0563200650) continues the saga of Jim Hacker, the perpetually baffled minister; Sir Humphrey Appleby, the silver-tongued mandarin who could strangle a policy with a subordinate clause; and Bernard Woolley, the secretary torn between honesty and career survival. This book isn?t just a straight script dump (though the dialogue is here in all its glory); it?s fleshed out with diary entries from Hacker himself, giving readers the inside scoop on the push-and-pull between politicians and civil servants. Expect the usual mixture of bureaucratic double-speak, circular reasoning, and exquisitely polite sabotage. If you?ve ever wondered how governments manage to do so little with so much, here?s your answer?wrapped in comedy so sharp it doubles as satire and documentary. As for the copy: this one comes courtesy of Crappy Old Books , and it?s rated Good . That means the cover has survived a few skirmishes (a scuff here, a crease there?nothing a select committee would bother reporting), the pages have gently yellowed like Cabinet minutes left too near the radiator, and the corners are slightly softened from years of negotiation in briefcases. But the spine is strong, the text perfectly clear, and every bureaucratic circumlocution remains gloriously intact. No tea-ring circles from Whitehall meetings, no doodles of Harold Wilson in the margins, no leaked memos tucked inside?just a solid, well-loved copy. In short: Yes Minister, Vol. 2 remains as funny and depressingly relevant today as it did in the early ?80s. This copy is in Good condition: seasoned, sturdy, and ready for another round of political obfuscation. Another dryly comic survivor from Crappy Old Books, where even satire on government inefficiency arrives efficiently bound. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS USUALLY TO THE FRONT AND BACK INNER PAGES SAYS SOLD BY CRAPPY OLD BOOKS WITH WEB SITE URL. Paperback. Condizione: Good. Yes Minister ? The Diaries of a Cabinet Minister by the Rt Hon James Hacker MP, Volume Three (1983) by Jonathan Lynn & Antony Jay ? Condition: Used (Crappy Old Books) Ah, Volume Three: the grand finale of Jim Hacker?s ministerial diaries, in which our hapless hero finally begins to suspect that his job title doesn?t quite equal power. Yes Minister was always a razor-sharp satire on the British political machine, but in these pages (BBC, 1983, ISBN: 0563201967), Jonathan Lynn and Antony Jay bring the saga to a peak of bureaucratic brilliance. Hacker scribbles his ?private? diary, Sir Humphrey Appleby continues his death-defying feats of verbal strangulation, and Bernard Woolley still dithers between truth and career survival. The format is the same delicious cocktail: official-looking diary entries, verbatim scripts, and sly editorial asides that make you feel you?ve been given a pass to the Cabinet Office. Expect policy ?initiatives? that lead nowhere, linguistic gymnastics worthy of an Olympic medal, and the dawning realisation that government is less about running the country than about ensuring Sir Humphrey never has to retire. It?s satire so convincing you sometimes forget you?re not actually reading real government papers. Now, the copy: it comes from Crappy Old Books , and it?s graded simply Used . Which is refreshingly blunt. Used means the cover shows handling (a scuff here, a crease there, the kind of wear you?d expect from being hauled in and out of briefcases), the spine may be limbered up like a civil servant avoiding direct questions, and the pages may carry a warm tint of age. But all is intact, legible, and perfectly usable. No tea stains from Whitehall, no pencilled annotations in permanent secretary shorthand, no secret memos tucked inside?just a copy that?s lived its own modest bureaucratic life. In short: Volume Three wraps up Hacker?s diaries with wit as dry as sherry at a select committee. This copy is Used?experienced, reliable, and still perfectly capable of making you laugh (or cry) at how little has changed. Another well-worn survivor from Crappy Old Books, where even satire on government inefficiency circulates efficiently through the second-hand market.
