Soft cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. IMAGES OF PARADISE IN ISLAMIC ART, edited by Sheila Blair and Jonathan M. Bloom, softcover, a richly illustrated exhibition catalog, 1991. BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block and illustrations are in near fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog-ears. No bookplate or name of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The wraps are in fairly good condition (crease in lower right hand corner of front cover, scratches and spotting on back cover). 12 x 9, 116 pages, 19 ounces XX [From the preface] The concept for this exhibition, which explores the complex imagery of Paradise in Islamic art, developed innocently enough from an effort to catalogue a single object in the collection of the Hood Museum of Art. At the invitation of Jacquelynn Baas, then director of the museum, Esin Atil of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution and Walter Denny of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst came to Dartmouth in early 1988 to examine a recently conserved panel of tiles from Ottoman Turkey. After a consideration of the style and provenance of this piece (although similar to the style of Iznik, it appears to have been produced in a provincial manufactory, probably in Northern Syria), the discussion turned to questions of function and imagery. The design of the panel is distinguished by an arched opening in the center filled with floral sprays and blossoms. As Dr. Denny noted, such motifs were not only appropriate for a composition which was probably intended to decorate a public fountain, they also symbolized the heavenly garden and the promise of Paradise as a reward for the donor who made this gift to the community. As this catalogue and the exhibition that it accompanies demonstrate, an awareness of the world to come pervades Muslim culture and was given varied expression in all of the traditional arts of the Islamic world: in textiles, ceramics, metalwork, painting and, above all, calligraphy, the medium through which the word of God is revealed in the Koran to the faithful. The exhibition is also intended to function as a survey of Islamic art, to the extent that this can be done with a relatively small group of objects. Thus, we have taken care to select works of art that will not only provide us with an understanding of the Islamic vision of Paradise, but will also introduce our audience to the extraordinary richness and beauty of Islamic art.…
