Profusely illustrated with 261 illustrations, including 106 in full color, color illustrated front and rear endpapers, and a color photographic multi-page frontispiece. 2nd Printing. "The great collection of The National Archives is one of the wonders of our country, the richest, most enthralling documentation we have as a nation of who we are, what we have achieved, our adventures, and what we stand for. Everything within is about us, all of us, all the way back for more than two hundred years, in good times and bad. It is a momentous, inexhaustible story, on paper .and on microfilm, and electromagnetic tape, in big leather-bound ledgers and albums, in maps, drawings, and something over 5,000,000 photographs." - David McCullough, from the Introduction. "The National Archives of the United States is marking its fiftieth anniversary this year, and this volume is celebrating the event. Few Americans have not left some trace in government records, and for anyone tracing his family roots, The National Archives is the place to look. Indeed, the range of material contained in the Archives is immense. Of course, unique original documents like the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are enshrined here, along with the Louisiana Purchase treaty, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, and the Homestead Act. So are presidential campaign buttons, illustrated family bibles, the passenger list for the Lusitania's final voyage, patent drawings, and almost every government document of importance. The fascinating text for this new volume is written by Herman J. Viola, director of the National Anthropological Archives. He is the author of several books and many articles in the field of American history. Viola is the perfect guide to the Archives, expertly leading us through our nation's history with facts, figures, and anecdotes. Stunning pictures - 106 in full color - were created especially for this book, illustrating the objects and documents discussed in the text. This volume, which includes a bibliography and an index, will be treasured by those who visit the Archives and by those who delight in discovering America's story. The National Archives' extraordinary collection - our official history - is a collection that truly belongs to us all." - from the inner front jacket flap. Vartan Gregorian[a] (born April 8, 1934) is an Armenian-American academic, educator, and historian. He has been serving as president of the Carnegie Corporation since 1997. An Armenian born in Iran, Gregorian moved to the United States at 22. He graduated with dual Ph.D. from Stanford University. From 1981 to 1989 he served as president of the New York Public Library during which he succeeded in financially stabilizing the institution and revitalizing its cultural importance. The New York Public Library (NYPL) is a public library system in New York City. With nearly 53 million items and 92 locations, the New York Public Library is the second largest public library in the United States (behind the Library of Congress) and the fourth largest in the world (behind the Library of Congress and the British Library). It is a private, non-governmental, independently managed, nonprofit corporation operating with both private and public financing. The library, officially chartered as The New York Public Library, Astor, Lenox and Tilden Foundations, was developed in the 19th century, founded from an amalgamation of grass-roots libraries and social libraries of bibliophiles and the wealthy, aided by the philanthropy of the wealthiest Americans of their age. The "New York Public Library" name may also refer to its Main Branch, which is easily recognizable by its lion statues named Patience and Fortitude that sit either side of the entrance. The branch was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, and designated a New York City Landmark in 1967. The historian David McCullough has described the New York Public Library as one of the five most important libraries in the United States; the others are the Library of Congress, the Boston Public Library, a.
