Ramsey Campbell (born 4 January 1946) is a…n English horror fiction writer, editor and critic who has been writing for well over fifty years. He is the author of over 30 novels and hundreds of short stories, many of them winners of literary awards. Three of his novels have been adapted into films. Since he first came to prominence in the mid-1960s, critics have cited Campbell as one of the leading writers in his field: T.E.D. Klein has written that "Campbell reigns supreme in the field today", and Robert Hadji has described him as "perhaps the finest living exponent of the British weird fiction tradition", while S. T. Joshi stated, "future generations will regard him as the leading horror writer of our generation, every bit the equal of Lovecraft or Blackwood." In a 2021 appreciation of his collected works, The Washington Post said: "Taken together, they constitute one of the monumental accomplishments of modern popular fiction." He finished the collection that would become Demons by Daylight in 1968, but it would not see print until 1973. Meanwhile, from 1969 to 1973, he continued to write short stories in which he gradually developed his own voice and themes. Campbell worked in the Liverpool Public Libraries as a library assistant (196673) and was acting librarian in charge (197173). By 1973, Campbell became a fulltime writer, encouraged by the issuance by Arkham House of his second collection, Demons by Daylight (as by Ramsey Campbell). That collection had been due for publication in 1971, but was held back two years by the death of August Derleth. Demons by Daylight includes The Franklyn Paragraphs, which uses Lovecraft's documentary narrative technique without slipping into parody of his writing style. Other tales, such as The End of a Summer's Day and Concussion, show the emergence of Campbell's highly distinctive mature style. Demons by Daylight is a collection of stories by English author Ramsey Campbell. Released in 1973, it was the author's second short story collection, after The Inhabitant of the Lake and Less Welcome Tenants. It was published in an edition totaling 3,472 copies and with dust jacket art by Eddie Jones, commissioned by Campbell. Campbell has acknowledged that the stories in the book were written primarily under the stylistic influence of Vladimir Nabokov. Campbell was attempting to move away from his dependence on the influence of H.P. Lovecraft, and the style of these stories is radically different from the Cthulhu Mythos tales found in his first collection. The book's first appearance induced T. E. D. Klein to write an extensive and highly positive review, "Ramsey Campbell: An Appreciation" in Nyctalops magazine. Demons by Daylight contains the following stories, grouped into three sections: Nightmares--"Potential"; "The End of a Summer's Day"; "At First Sight"; Errol Undercliffe: a tribute--"The Franklyn Paragraphs"; "The Interloper" (as by Errol Undercliffe); Relationships--"The Sentinels"; "The Guy"; "The Old Horns"; "The Lost"; "The Stocking"; "The Second Staircase"; "Concussion"; "The Enchanted Fruit"; and "Made in Goatswood". Edward John Jones (18 January 1935 15 October 1999) was a British science fiction illustrator. He illustrated numerous science fiction book and magazine covers, some under the pseudonym S. Fantoni, and provided interior illustrations for books and magazines. Jones was active in the field from 1953 to 1985, and reprints of his artwork continued to appear on book covers until his death in 1999. Eddie Jones was born 18 January 1935 in Bootle, Lancashire, in the United Kingdom. In 1969, he became the art editor for Vision of Tomorrow, a short-lived British SF magazine. Although probably best known for his Star Trek covers for Bantam Books and almost fifty covers for Sphere Books, much of his output was for German publishers, including more than 100 covers for Bastei Lübbe's science fiction imprint and over 500 for Terra Astra magazine. The Science Fiction Writers of America described Jones as "the precursor to a generation of artists that helped define the look of early '70s SF illustration". He was nominated for a Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist in 1970 and 1971. In Larry Niven's short story "Singularities Make Me Nervous", from Convergent Series, the protagonist, speaking in the future, describes his apartment as containing "Eddie Jones originals" Presumed First Edition, First printing.
