SynopsisThis essay by Carol Damian begins in the 1950s with the artist group Los Once [The Eleven Ones] followed by a discussion of the 1959 revolution, and the "Miami Generation" of the 1960s. It continues with coverage of the artistic repression in Cuba during the 1970s, followed by the 1980s, when, according to Damian, Cuban art flourished on the island? following the establishment of the Ministry of Culture and the Instituto Superior del Arte (1976)?and abroad (as Latin American art was becoming more recognized). She states that many of the artists recognized on the island during the ?80s immigrated to the United States at the end of the decade, many to South Florida, where they became the so-called ?Generation of the ?90s.?AnnotationsArt History Professor and art critic Carol Damian has followed closely the work of contemporary Cuban and Cuban-American artists living in Miami. This text accompanied the 1997 exhibition, Breaking Barriers at The Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, featuring selections from their collection of contemporary Cuban art. Damian's essay is noteworthy in its description of the consistencies in the wide variety of works produced by the artists included in the exhibition. These artists incorporate the vestiges of Cuban architectural ornamentation, domestic kitsch, and surreal figments of the imagination in their unique quests for identity.

William Glackens was one of the most influential American painters in the first decades of the twentieth century. From his beginnings as a witty magazine artist-illustrator in Philadelphia and New York to his participation in the forward-thinking group of artists dubbed The Eight, Glackens was a perceptive interpreter of his surroundings. Glackens, one of the most versatile and popular artists of his time, assimilated the lighthearted modern French themes of spirited cafes and bustling parks and resorts in such canvases as Chez Mouquin (1905) and Sledding, Central Park (1912). An admirer of the more traditional figure painting of the Impressionist Renoir, his name also became closely linked to the modern artists who exhibited their works at the famous Armory Show of 1913, which Glackens helped organize. This important study, the first major monograph on Glackens, includes an insightful essay by Dr. William Gerdts and a complete catalog, introduced by curator Jorge Santis, describing the incomparable holdings of the Glackens Collection of the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. With a chronology, bibliography, and index, this profusely illustrated volume is sure to become the standard reference on Glackens for historians and collectors of twentieth-century art.
