Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is a rich and multifaceted exploration of the often-overlooked role of the Nachtwächter or night watchman in German history and culture. The author has gathered a wealth of fascinating material, including historical documents, songs, and anecdotes to paint a vivid picture of these important figures. The Nachtwächter emerged in the Middle Ages as guardians of the peace, responsible for patrolling the streets at night and raising the alarm in case of fire or danger. Over time, they became symbols of civic pride and community spirit, and their songs and calls became an integral part of the urban soundscape. The author analyzes the Nachtwächter phenomenon from a variety of perspectives, examining their social and economic status, their relationship with the authorities, and their role in shaping popular culture. He also explores the literary and artistic legacy of the Nachtwächter, from their appearances in fairy tales and operas to their depiction in paintings and engravings. Ultimately, this book is a celebration of the Nachtwächter as a unique and enduring figure in German history and culture. Through its rich tapestry of stories, songs, and images, the author brings these forgotten guardians of the night back to life, offering a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a comprehensive collection of traditional German night watchman songs (Nachtwächterlieder) gathered from dozens of German-speaking regions. These fascinating songs from the 15th to the 20th centuries provide a glimpse into the lives, fears, hopes, piety, and creativity of the night watchmen of days gone by. The songs often make references to historical events and famous people and sometimes include moral lessons. The book is structured into four parts: 1. The History of the Night Watchmen, 2. The Songs arranged by state and within the state by town with accompanying annotations where necessary, 3. Thematically related songs and miscellaneous songs including several melodies, and 4. A German-language discussion of the songs. Extensively researched and assembled with love, this book is a valuable resource for folklorists, historians, musicologists, and lovers of German culture. Its vast array of songs and insightful analysis sheds light on the largely forgotten profession of the night watchman, a figure once indispensable to German town life.
