Fifth Edition. Full leather with five raised bands and brown label on spine. Six chapter 151 pages. "The Sure Way of Attaining a Long and Healthful Life" at front. 44 page "Rules for Health and Directions for Life" by Joseph Addison at back. The six chapters in Cornaro's work include 1. OF a Sober and Regular Life 2. How to Corr…ect a Bad Constitution 3. A letter to Signior Barbaro, Patriarch of Aquilea, by which we may learn how to enjoy a compleat happiness in old age 4. Of the Birth and Death of Man 5. A Letter from a Nun of Padua, the Grand-daughter of Lewis Cornaro. 6. Extracts from the History of M. de Thou, and the Dialogues of Cardan, concerning the method of prolonging a man's life, and preserving his health. Lastly is a section of "Maxims concerning the prolonging of Life." Addison's work is divided into four sections entitled Spectator 411, Spectator 289, Spectator 317 & Spectator 574. The first work was originally written in Italian by Cornaro, a noble Venetian, when he was near a hundred years of age. Translated into English. Printed for D. Midwinter, at the Three Crowns in St. Paul's Church-yard; and A. Ward, at the King's-Arms in Little-Britain. A paragraph from The Spectator Vol. III No. 195 printed opposite the title page talks of Cornaro's treatise. Original 18th century binding. Leather cracked at hinges with some wear at corners. A little perimeter marginal staining of first few pages front and back from oiling of leather. Top corner of title page margin cut - presumably to remove an owner's name. Narrow stain in margin at top of first 20 leaves. A little foxing and some random minor stains. Small handwritten pen note on rear endpaper. Luigi Cornaro (1467-1566) wrote four Discourses on the Life of Moderation and was translated by George Herbert into English. Addison thought highly of his work. Addison (1672-1719) made many contributions to "The Spectator". Rare. Good condition. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
