Rare first publication of this early work of Nobel Prize-winning Russian poet and essayist Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996) by the only publishing house outside of Russia dedicated to Russian literature in both English and Russian. This Russian-language collection consists of poems written by the poet before leaving the Soviet Union and contains Brodsky's famous "Letter to general Z" ["Pismo generalu Z"] written in 1968 as a response to the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, the title poem "The End of a Beautiful Era" (1969) and the 1967 poem on loss entitled "Speech over Spilled Milk" ["Rech o prolitom moloke"]. This collection was compiled by the author himself in collaboration with his friends Karl and Ellendea Proffer, creators of "Ardis".
