VOLUME I AND II (complete set). Poor condition. Full title: COMMENTARIES ON THE LAWS OF ENGLAND: IN FOUR BOOKS; WITH ANALYSIS OF THE WORK. BY SIR WILLIAM BLACKSTONE . . . IN TWO VOLUMES, FROM THE NINETEENTH LONDON EDITION. WITH A LIFE OF THE AUTHOR, AND NOTES BY CHRISTIAN, CHITTY, LEE, HOVENDEN, AND RYLAND; AND ALSO REFERENCES TO AMERICAN CASES, BY A MEMBER OF THE NEW YORK BAR. Full leather-bound hardcover volumes, approximate dimensions H 23cm x L 14.5cm. VOLUME I (containing Books I and II): missing front free endpaper to title page inclusive; first page present is Preface (page 3); paged 3-404, 1-452; worn spine leather complete detached from backstrip and now laid-in; scuffed front and rear boards tenuously attached by to spine by threads; large loss of surface leather to rear board along spine edge; soiling and staining as well as foxing and browning to interior leaves; bug damage along margins of rear pastedown and two rear flyleaves; one rear flyleaf has large loss as well as pencil notes; various pencil marks/notes and occasional faded antiquarian ink notes in page margins. VOLUME II (containing Books III and IV) paged as i-xx, 1-369, [1], 1-402; spine leather completely lacking; front board along with front free endpaper and front flyleaf completely detached; pencil ownership inscription of a "W.C. Shumaker" of Macon, Mississippi dated 1883 on detached flyleaf; rear board tenuously attached; strong browning to interior leaves with some moisture stains. Binding leather of Vol. 2 is of light brown calf whereas Vol. 1 has dark brown patina; there is also a fractional difference in book dimensions and the paper quality between the two volumes differs as well so it is likely that Vol. 1 is of a different publisher or at least a different year than that of Vol. 2 but, of course, the former is missing its title page. Both books, however, have a large antiquarian bindery ticket for "Clarion Book Bindery Jackson, Miss" located at the top left corners of their respective front pastedowns. Jackson, Mississippi's Clarion-Ledger newspaper started in Jasper County near Meridian in 1837 as The Eastern Clarion but did not move to Jackson and become The Clarion until just after the Civil War. Presumably Clarion Book Bindery (I have also encountered tickets for "Clarion Office Book Bindery") would have been an ancillary business to the newspaper company and would probably make the binding date to circa 1865-1880. Nineteenth century bindery or bookseller tickets for Mississippi are quite uncommon. British jurist Sir William Blackstone (1723-1780) was the colonial era's eminent legal scholar and his Commentaries were requisite reading for every lawyer in the nascent American republic. Poor copies in need of re-binding but still with an unusual quality for a Southern collector.…
