Dort trifft er die erfahrenen Westmänner Sam Hawkens, Dick Stone und Will Parker, die den jungen Mann unter ihre Fittiche nehmen. Als ein Grizzly-Bär in das Lager eindringt, kann ihn Old Shatterhand, wie er inzwischen genannt wird, mit dem Messer töten. Kurz darauf kommen Intschu-tschuna, der Häuptling der Apatschen, sein Sohn Winnetou und der weise Klekih-petra in das Lager der Eisenbahner und weisen die Landvermesser darauf hin, dass dies ihr Land sei und die Arbeiten abgebrochen werden müssen. Klekih-petra wird von dem betrunkenen Rattler erschossen, woraufhin die Apatschen das Kriegsbeil ausgraben. Ein erster Angriff der Apatschen wird abgeschlagen, Winnetou und sein Vater werden von den mit den Weißen verbündeten Kiowas gefangen genommen, doch Old Shatterhand kann sie heimlich befreien. Kurz darauf greifen die Apatschen wieder an. Old Shatterhand wird lebensgefährlich verwundet. Sam Hawkens, Dick Stone, Will Parker und Rattler werden als Gefangene ins Lager der Apatschen gebracht. Old Shatterhand wird dort von Winnetous Schwester Nscho-tschi für den Martertod gesund gepflegt. Als es soweit ist, erfahren die Freunde, dass Old Shatterhand um ihr Leben kämpfen soll.
