L'auteur, médecin de la marine, était chargé à l'hôp…ital de Saint-Laurent de Moroni du service médical des transportés arabes et noirs. "Je me propose d'étudier les maladies de la Guyane en mettant en relief les différences pathologiques que présentent les diverses races habitant cette colonie" (préface). Son point de vue, à la fois très hygiéniste, et très pessimiste, conclut à la stabilité absolue des particularités génétiques héritées et donc à l'impossibilité d'acclimater les Occidentaux dans les climats tropicaux.
