Journey through the English Lake District, a scenic area in Cumbria, through the lens of the human and historic interest of the region beyond its famed topography. The author ventures to explore the often-overlooked historic narrative hidden in the picturesque towns and villages that give the region its character. The Lake District is more than just a collection of photogenic views and hiking trails; it's a region shaped by centuries of human history and border conflict, and its story is embedded in the landscape. The author takes an engaging, roundabout route to introduce the reader to these byways and their significance, blending humor with a deep appreciation for the rich history and evocative atmosphere of the Cumbrian countryside. This book is an ideal companion for anyone interested in getting beneath the skin of this cherished corner of England. Joseph Pennell s Pictures of the Panama Canal, Reproductions of a series of lithograpgs made by him on the Isthmus of Panama, January March, 1912, together with impressions and notes by the artist; J. B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia and London, 1912. Third Edition. Joseph Pennell (1857 1926) was an American artist and author. In 1912, Pennell travelled to Panama to create lithographs of the Panama Canal, which was still under construction, making his pictorial history of the Panama Canal, one of a kind, showing the massive infrastructure from inside the canal. France began work on the canal in 1881, but stopped because of engineering problems and a high worker mortality rate. The United States took over the project in 1904 and opened the canal on August 15, 1914. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduced the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America via the Drake Passage or Strait of Magellan and the even less popular route through the Arctic Archipelago and the Bering Strait. The Panama Canal is an artificial 82 km (51 mi) waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a conduit for maritime trade. Canal locks are at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 m (85 ft) above sea level, and then lower the ships at the other end. The original locks are 32.5 m (110 ft) wide. The construction of the Panama Canal is where the expression "Another Day, Another Dollar" comes from, as the workers were rumored to be paid a dollar a day for their labor This book is bound in brown cloth with a paper cover sheet pasted on the front. This sheet has some light water staining. Internally the book is in fine condition overall a very copy of this scarce book.
