Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition (per matching dates upon title and copyright pages). 442 pages. H 23cm x L 15.25cm. Poor condition - original dark beige cloth rubbed, strong mottling to spine and along joint of front board, spine ends well frayed with cloth loss and tearing, gilt stamped spine lettering easily legible but no longer particularly bright, beveled board edges with corners worn. Front hinge splitting; past owner's signature in pencil on front free endpaper with an inverted inscription by same owner dated 1887 also in pencil on rear free endpaper; four quires (pages 209-272) tenuously attached to binding by a mere two or three threads; some pencil check marks at margins of first three chapters; a few page corners creased. Although born and educated in Maine, S.S. Prentiss rose to prominence in Mississippi as a lawyer practicing in Natchez and Vicksburg. He was elected to the Mississippi State House of Representatives for the 1836-1837 term and served in the US Congress from May 30, 1838, to March 3, 1839 after contesting the election of John F.H. Claiborne. A supporter of the Whig Party, Prentiss is best remembered for his eloquent oratory and, in particular, his speeches upon the House floor where, according to legend, Senator Daniel Webster would switch chambers on such occasions so as to hear his colleague speak. However, Prentiss failed in his bid for the US Senate in 1840 whereupon he moved to New Orleans and resumed practicing law. Wright Howes US IANA S-414. A poor copy of a scarce biography.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the first complete census of the Philippines conducted in line with American standards, occurring in 1903 after the establishment of peace following the Philippine-American War. Directed by the Philippine Commission, the census was carried out by Filipinos, led by local officials, and is notable for including data on the non-Christian and wild tribes of the archipelago. Drawing from historical records, missionary accounts, and contemporary observations, the author provides a comprehensive account of the Philippine people, their origins, and their way of life. His work touches on topics as varied as language, education, agriculture, and mortality, while simultaneously exploring the cultural and social practices of the time. The result is a detailed and multifaceted portrait of the Philippines at the turn of the 20th century, a point of transition between centuries of Spanish rule and the burgeoning American influence. This book is a valuable resource for historians, anthropologists, and anyone interested in the history and culture of the Philippines. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition of Hellerâs classic first book. Octavo, original blue cloth. Boldly signed by Joseph Heller and the actors of the film Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss. The 1970 film adaptation of Catch-22, directed by Mike Nichols from a screenplay by Buck Henry, stands as one of the most ambitiously cast Hollywood productions, assembling an extraordinary constellation of comic and dramatic talent to bring Joseph Heller's sprawling satirical novel to the screen. At the center of the ensemble was Alan Arkin as Captain John Yossarian, the bombardier antihero whose desperate attempts to escape the machinery of military madness drive the narrative â" a performance of controlled, slow-burning exasperation that drew on Arkin's considerable stage and screen pedigree and earned widespread critical admiration. Bob Newhart, whose deadpan comedic persona had already made him one of the most distinctive voices in American entertainment, brought his trademark understated bewilderment to the role of Major Major Major Major, the hapless officer promoted to squadron commander against his will â" a character tailor-made for Newhart's ability to find absurdist comedy in bureaucratic helplessness. Richard Benjamin, fresh from his breakthrough in Goodbye, Columbus (1969), lent the film sharp intelligence and a certain wry urbanity, while Paula Prentiss â" criminally underutilized by Hollywood throughout her career despite possessing exceptional comic instincts and considerable dramatic range â" delivered one of the film's most memorable supporting turns. Rounding out the cast were Jon Voight, Art Garfunkel in his screen acting debut, Charles Grodin, Anthony Perkins, Martin Sheen, and Orson Welles, the latter cast against type as the imperious General Dreedle. Though the film was commercially overshadowed by Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in the same year, Vincent Canby of the New York Times called it the best American film he had seen that year, and it has since retained a devoted following as a serious and ambitious work of antiwar cinema. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. Housed in a custom half morocco slipcase. An exceptional example. "Catch-22, Joseph Heller's first and best-known novel, depicts a military world turned upside down. In Heller's World War II, a supplies manager has more power than a general, and anyone seeking a discharge on the grounds of insanity is declared sane enough to keep on fighting. When the novel appeared in 1961, World War II veterans appreciated its satire of the military bureaucracy and chaos of war. By the mid-1960's, it had become a cult classic among counterculture activists for its biting indictments of war. Many consider the novel to be the definitive statement of the modern antiwar position. The phrase 'Catch-22', symbolizing the absurdity of all institutional logic, has become a permanent part of our language" (NYPL Books of the Century 177). Basis for the 1970 film directed by Mike Nichols. The cast included Alan Arkin, Bob Balaban, Martin Balsam, Richard Benjamin, Olimpia Carlisi, Art Garfunkel, Jack Gilford, Charles Grodin, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, Paula Prentiss, Martin Sheen, Jon Voight, and Orson Welles.…
