Der Werktitel Frühlingsboten ist mehrschichtig. Er beinhaltet nicht nur einen Bezug zum Frühling in der Natur, wie etwa die Überschriften der ersten beiden Stücke, Winterruhe" und Frühlingsnahen" zum Ausdruck bringen. Das Wort Frühlingsboten" deutet außerdem auf den Liebesfrühling", das Aufblühen der Liebe zu seiner späteren Ehefrau, der Schauspielerin Doris Genast. Dies zeigt sich in den Überschriften der Stücke ab Nr. 3, die den Weg von der Annäherung über verschiedene Irritationen bis zur Verbundenheit eines imaginären Paares skizzieren.
