6 (of 7) engraved plates. 1 p.l., 37 pp. 8vo, late 19th-cent. marbled boards (spine rubbed), leather lettering-piece perished. Ghent: [1815]. A rare and early illustrated auction catalogue, selling off the stock and studio contents of the Ghent painter and dealer Spruyt (1769-1851), who emigrated to Italy; we find two copies of the catalogue in North American libraries. Catalogues from the 18th and early 19th centuries were hardly ever illustrated, this one is an interesting exception. Our copy retains six of seven plates recorded in most examples, although there are others that have just six plates bound-in. According to the Getty Provenance Index Databases entry, the first 189 lots in the sale belonged to Spruyt, while nos. 190 to 243 were consigned by the Ghent collector François Guillaume Joseph Odemaer (1729-1812). The catalogue concludes with unnumbered lots of Spruyt's sketches, drawings, prints, and books. A very good copy. Bookplate of Henry Pannier to front paste-down. ? Lugt 8766.
