Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Limited Edition. 1974, not paginated, about 100pp, facsimiles of letters with drawings. Limited to 500 copies. Rear inner hinge neatly reinforced, light wear and scuffing, else G in G clear plastic dj. Pierce was of an old New England family. He had graduated from MIT and practiced as a civil engineer in Baltimore and Washington. His work with the US Geological Survey took him to various locations: Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Georgia and elsewhere. His letters are filled with interesting drawings and short descriptions of the places where he was currently residing. Laura's father was Austin Cornelius Dunham, friend of Charles Dudley Warner, Mark Twain, Joseph Twichell and other leading lights of Hartford, where she had been born and raised. The letters seem to indicate a close friendship, though not necessarily of a romantic nature. We don't have Laura's letters and we don't know how often they saw each other. We do know that Pierce's letters ended in 1889 and that Laura married someone else in 1890.
