Neuware -Shota Rustawelis 'Recke im Tigerfell', weithin als das Nationalepos Georgiens anerkannt und seit 2013 in das UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen, ist ein in vielerlei Hinsicht bemerkenswertes Werk. Am Übergang vom 12. zum 13. Jahrhundert und damit etwa 800 Jahre nach Beginn der georgischen Schriftlichkeit entstanden, markiert es eine scharfe Abkehr weg von dem christlich-orthodox determinierten, im Wesentlichen theologisch ausgerichteten Schrifttum, das die altgeorgische Periode bis dahin prägte. Auch Shota Rustawelis Werk kann seinen christlichen Hintergrund nicht verleugnen; es ist jedoch zugleich durch andere Strömungen gekennzeichnet, die sich im damaligen Georgien begegneten: zum einen eine lebhafte Auseinandersetzung mit der antiken griechischen Philosophie, die vielfach als die 'georgische Renaissance' bezeichnet worden ist, und zum anderen der allgegenwärtige Einfluss persisch-islamischer Kultur, einschließlich der durch Autoren wie Firdousi oder Nizami vertretenen Dichtkunst.Über die Person Shota Rustawelis ist, der Bedeutung seines Werkes zum Trotz, erstaunlich wenig Sicheres bekannt. Man wird jedoch nicht weit fehlgehen, wenn man seine Lebenszeit auf etwa die Jahre 1172 bis 1216 ansetzt. Die letzten Jahre seines Lebens dürfte der Dichter nicht in Georgien, sondern im Kreuzkloster in der Nähe von Jerusalem verbracht haben, das im 11. Jahrhundert von Georgiern erbaut worden war.Seit dem ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert hat es zahlreiche Versuche gegeben, Shota Rustawelis Versdichtung in andere Sprachen zu übersetzen, darunter auch ins Deutsche. Welche Schwierigkeiten dies bereiten kann, zeigt sich bereits am Titel des Epos selbst, für den Varianten wie 'Der Mann im Tigerfell', 'Der Mann im Pantherfell', 'Der Held im Pantherfell', 'Der Ritter im Tigerfell', 'Der Recke im Tigerfell' oder auch einfach 'Das Pantherfell' existieren. Problematischer als der Titel des Werks dürfte für jeden Übersetzer die metrische Gestalt von Rustawelis Versdichtung sein. Sämtliche Strophen des Epos sind in einem Vierzeiler mit identischem Reimausgang gehalten, bei dem jede Verszeile sechzehn Silben umfasst und zusätzlich durch eine Zäsur in der Mitte gekennzeichnet ist. Lediglich die hier neu herausgegebene Nachdichtung des österreichischen Autors Hugo Huppert (1902-1982) aus dem Jahre 1955 versucht, diese Versform soweit wie möglich nachzuahmen, was ihr einen besonderen Rang verleiht.Illustriert ist die vorliegende Ausgabe durch 54 Miniaturen aus der Handschrift S-5006 des Handschriftenzentrums in Tbilisi, die etwa aus dem 17.-18. Jahrhundert stammen dürften und die in ihrer filigranen Ausgestaltung klare Einflüsse persischer Vorbilder zeigen. 264 pp. Deutsch.
