cloth, paper spine label. 8vo. cloth, paper spine label. xii, 198, (2) pages. Edited and with commentary by Joyce Lancester Wilson. Limited to 850 copies and printed from Monotype Ehrhardt at the press of W. Thomas Taylor. Adrian Wilson (1923-1988) was internationally known as a designer and printer of fine books. During his car…eer, he produced over 200 titles, authored a standard text, The Design of Books for his field, wrote two important scholarly books on early printing and manuscripts, and inspired the friendship of a wide circle of fellow bibliophiles around the world. Less well-known is that Wilson was a conscientious objector during the Second World War and that he learned the rudiments of printing in a work camp at Waldport, Oregon, to which he was assigned. When Wilson left home to attend Wesleyan University in September 1941, he began to write long, intimate letters to his parents, almost daily, describing his life at college, his growing involvement with pacifists there and his struggle to decide on a course of action. These letters are now published for the first time here in this work designed by Jerry Kelly and printed from Monotype Ehrhardt at the Press of W. Thomas Taylor.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Collectible-Fine. Limited edition. One of 350 copies. Text is in English and French. Original publisher's beige wrappers. Deckle edge. 8 3/4" x 13 1/2." Eight unnumbered pages, complete. One color illustration, complete. Pages and covers are very clean and intact except for a slight bit of wrinkling. A Fi…ne copy. Colophon in the back: "Three-hundred and fifty copies have been printed by Adrian Wilson with the assistance of Clifford Burke at the Press in Tuscany Alley, San Francisco, for presentation by Joseph M. Bransten and Adrian Wilson to the members of the Zamorano and Roxburghe Clubs at their joint meeting in Los Angeles in September 1974. The types are Cristal from Deberny & Peignot, Paris, and Van Dijck composed by Mackenzie & Harris, Inc. The papers are Tweedweave and Colophon text from the Butler Paper Company." This pamphlet contains a facsimile broadside that was originally published by Dembour & Gangel around 1850. The Introduction by Joseph M. Bransten and Adrian Wilson explains the provenance of the facsimile, "During 1973 an exhibition from the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Bibliotheque Nationale of Paris was held at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Joseph M. Bransten, a member of the Roxburghe Club, took particular delight in a colorful broadside titled Mine d'Or de la Californie which gave a distinctly French view of life and mining in this region in 1850. He conceived the idea that it might be reproduced, with a translation, for the 1974 joint meeting of the Roxburghe and Zamorano Clubs. He asked his fellow-Roxburgher Adrian Wilson if he would secure permission to reproduce it during the latter's research summer in Europe. . Joyce Lancaster Wilson translated it without any recognition of the strange faraway land it described. At home in Tuscany Alley she and Melissa Wilson added the coloring to the picture." The broadside describes some of California's geography, history, and its gold mines during the Gold Rush. The facsimile is followed by the English translation.

He was 64 years old. Working out of a small San Francisco studio known as '"The Press at Tuscany Valley," Mr. Wilson designed and printed scores of books. His many volumes, while little known to the general public, are famous among print connoisseurs, and many are collectors' items. In 1983, Mr. Wilson won a MacArthur Fellowship. He is survived by his wife and by his daughter, Melissa Wilson Marshall, of San Francisco.******. Adrian Wilson (illustratore).

Adrian Wilson (1924-1988) is known to all lovers of beautiful books; he started printing with Jack Stauffacher in 1948, and two years later set up his own print…ing house, called "At the Sign of the Interplayers", in his home in San Francisco. In 1952 he opened a shop with other printers in downtown SF; he went to England to study in 1958-59 and upon his return did free-lance work for the University of California Press and others. He and his wife, Joyce Lancaster Wilson (nee Harvey) established The Press in Tuscany Alley and, amidst publishing a dizzying array of books and ephemera, Wilson also was a published author, with his "The Design of Books" being regarded as a classic text on book design. The book itself contains a comprehensive list of more than 500 ephemeral items; it was published in a limited edition of 85 copies, this prospectus includes two sample leaves tucked into a pocket at the rear. ___DESCRIPTION: Sewn binding, in heavy cardstock wraps with the illustration of a jester in four colours in the front wrap, back wrap with a flap that includes a short advertisement for the book written by Joyce Lancaster Wilson, the prospectus itself being two sheets, folded once to form four leaves, the first page with a vignette of a lady wearing a medieval style outfit, lettering in red and black, the second page serving as the frontispiece with a black and white photograph of the entrance to the press (by Michael Mundy, c. 1988), the third page serving as the title page in red and black, the fourth through sixth pages with a description of the book, another small vignette of a lady, printing in black and red, the seventh page being the price list for the book, the final page serving as colophon; folio size (large quarto size, just under 12" by 9").
