El léxico jurídico bizantino se fue conformando en los siglos posteriores a la codificación de Justiniano sobre la base de la lengua griega, a la que se vertieron los conceptos jurídicos del derecho romano expresados hasta entonces en latín. Es evidente que el léxico jurídico griego de la Antigüedad proporcion…ó un punto de partida, pero la realidad social y jurídica romana había creado muchos nuevos conceptos y categorías que costó tiempo expresar en griego. Listas de equivalencias entre términos jurídicos latinos y griegos fueron recogidas en manuscritos bizantinos, editados en época moderna, pero nunca se había hecho un diccionario de terminología jurídica bizantina como el presente en ninguna lengua moderna. Nuestro propósito es modesto, ya que el léxico incluido está tomado solamente de dos obras, la Introducción al derecho del patriarca Focio, escrita ca. 886, y las Novelas de León VI el Sabio (r. 886-912). No obstante, pensamos que es representativo del léxico más usual en el ámbito del derecho de la época y que puede ser de ayuda a los especialistas que se acercan por vez primera a textos de derecho bizantino. Distinguimos en los lemas los usos comunes de los especializados y hemos confeccionado un índice analítico en el que debajo de cada ámbito o materia del derecho listamos las correspondientes palabras griegas.

The present book considers events of the period that are crucial to our understanding of the reign and argues for a more balanced assessment of it. The focus lies on the impact of Oriental politics on the reign of Theophilos, the last iconoclast emperor. After introductory chapters, setting out the context in which he came to power, separate sections are devoted to the influence of Armenians at the court, the enrolment of Persian rebels against the caliphate in the Byzantine army, the continuous warfare with the Arabs and the cultural exchange with Baghdad, the Khazar problem, and the attitude of the Christian Melkites towards the iconoclast emperor. The final chapter reassesses the image of the emperor as a good ruler, building on the conclusions of the previous sections. The book reinterprets major events of the period and their chronology, and sets in a new light the role played by figures like Thomas the Slav, Manuel the Armenian or the Persian Theophobos, whose identity is established from a better understanding of the sources.
