"The Third North America…n Fur Trade Conference, held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in May 1978, was by general agreement a success [as] affirmed by the published papers of the conference in this volume. At the same time those who attended the conference will remember the growing sense of comradeship, the excitement of effort in a common cause which made the conference the rewarding experience it was. The program of the conference was, as the following papers confirmed, much wider than the term "fur trade" suggests. It dealt with people, European and native, with women in the fur trade, with crops, seasons, and weather. Its concerns were those of an entire way of life, as complete in itself as most human existence.
