Many knew him only as a poet; and indeed he was - a great one, and he was appointed as Poet Laureate for England, in which post he served longer than all but one other Poet Laureate : Tennyson. Masefield's production was creatively prolific. He produced, not only poetry, but essays, plays and novels for both adults and children. His writing is particularly rich, his poems memorable , and his prose sonorous. "King Cole" is a dramatic poem - a play in verse form. This excellent and engaging drama tells a story about a circus troupe struggling in the English countryside, based around the ancient legend of Good King Cole; and of how the folk in the story meet and are affected by King Cole. It seems, at least to me, that King Cole shares attributes of both The Green Man and Pan.
