A physician by training and a photographer by avocation, he was a dedicated and much-awarded maker of pictures. Active as a photographer during the decades just before and after the Second World War, Ellis experienced the burgeoning growth of amateur photography clubs, the expansion of corporate photography businesses and the establishment of photographic collections in major art museums across the country. This volume, based on an extensive photographic and documentary archive, places Ellis' work within the context of the Pictorialist movement in an effort to gain a better understanding of the complex undercurrents that helped to define this era of American photographic history. Susan Danly contributes essays on the development of Ellis' photographic style and the use of his photographs in advertising, and Chris Thompson contributes an interview with photographer Judy Ellis Glickman, Ellis' daughter and the subject of much of his work. Mainers will recognize Judy Glickman for her own photography and for her contributions to various causes in Maine including the Portland Museum of Art. EB; 12.0 X 9.9 X 0.8 inches; 128 pages.…

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Presence is a thrilling immersion into the personal collection of photographer and humanitarian Judy Glickman Lauder.Nearly 160 images by some eighty photographers, selected from Judy Glickman Lauder's collection of over 650 prints, explore the idea of "presence" of the human spirit. This stunningly designed album showcases the imagery of beloved and influential photographers of the twentieth century, such as Berenice Abbott, Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Imogen Cunningham, Nan Goldin, Susan Meiselas, Gordon Parks, Sebastio Salgado, Weegee, and James Van Der Zee. Spanning Pictorialism, portraiture, and fashion, to documentary and photojournalism, and featuring iconic figures from the fields of art, politics, entertainment, and social justice, Presence: The Photography Collection of Judy Glickman Lauder celebrates photography's ability to capture the human experience. Essays by Anjuli Lebowitz and Adam D. Weinberg provide historical and artistic context, while an autobiographical essay by Glickman Lauder tells the story of her collection. This book accompanies an exhibition drawn from the Judy Glickman Lauder Collection at the Portland Museum of Art, to which the Collection has been gifted. Published by Aperture in partnership with the Portland Museum of Art, Maine'Going through the pages of this book and seeing how Judy collects only deepens my love for the photographic medium. As a photography collector myself, I can relate to Judy's directive that the image must speak to the viewer in an emotional way - and every image within this book does just that!' - Elton John Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. "The photographs and stories in Beyond the Shadows are not just a reminder of how racism and anti-Semitism can foment violence and murder, but a warning for our uneasy present, when white nationalism and neo-Nazism are on the upswing. These stories are also a primer on how to stand up to prejudice, transcend tribalism and embrace our shared humanity."-Maurice Berger, The New York TimesThe extraordinary experiences of ordinary people-their suffering and their unimaginable bravery-are the subject of Judy Glickman Lauder's remarkable photographs. Beyond the Shadows responds to the mass murder of Jews during the Holocaust, while telling the uplifting story of how the citizens and leadership of Denmark, under occupation and at tremendous risk, defied the Third Reich to transport the country's Jews to safety in Sweden. Over the past thirty years Glickman Lauder has captured the intensity of the death camps in Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia in dark and expressive photographs, telling of a world turned upside down. In contrast, the redemptive and uplifting story of the "Danish exception" is told through portraits of Danish Jewish survivors and Danish rescuers. Over the course of a few intense weeks in 1943, the vast majority of Denmark's Jewish population, seven thousand people, along with nearly seven hundred non-Jewish spouses, were hidden in boats and carried across the resund to safety in Sweden. Denmark is the only nation in Western Europe that can claim the rescue of its Jewish population from the Holocaust. With texts by Holocaust scholars Michael Berenbaum and Judith S. Goldstein, recollections by Danish Jewish survivors, and a previously unpublished text by Elie Wiesel, written in response to this body of work, Beyond the Shadows demonstrates passionately what hate can lead to, and what can be done to stand in its path.
