Paris: Gruel and Engelmann, 1858. 151 x 113 mm. Original full paneled morocco blind-tooled in Gothic style, with metal clasps (pin of one clasp renewed), inner gilt dentelles; boxed. Light wear, spine skillfully repaired. Very good to fine. Presentation Copy, inscribed on the front flyleaf by Claye in an elegant hand to Mlle. Jeanne Ansart. A beautiful and rare example of this finely printed French prayerbook, printed entirely on vellum by Jules Claye, one of the greatest French printers of the mid-19th century. The publishers, Gruel & Engelmann, did not advertise copies of this work printed on vellum, so it is possible that Claye printed this special copy for his own use. Claye's elegantly written inscription to Mlle. Ansart reads: Quand vous touchez à l'heure où Dieu va vous bénir, Pour vous je fais des voeux sans vous connaître encore, Et je viens consacrer par un pieux souvenir, Le jour où vous verrez cette nouvelle aurore.
