Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 70 pages. Published in 1995. Retrospective Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Antanas Sutkus: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and large front inside flap, as issued. Photographs by Antanas Sutkus. Essay by Raminta Jurenaite. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Moscow, Russia to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition of the same name held at the George Soros Centre For Contemporary Arts Lithuania in 1995. Presents Antanas Sutkus' "Nostalgia For Bare Feet". Humanist photography at its very best. A Classicist in the great tradition of 20th-century street photography, Antanas Sutkus is regarded as perhaps Lithuania's greatest photographer, her Cartier-Bresson. His focus on children will remind viewers of Cartier-Bresson and also, Helen Levitt, the crucial difference being one of place: Levitt captures New York City's grit and melancholy whereas Sutkus depicts Lithuania's rural, small-town charm, innocence, and natural beauty. Starting with the lovely cover portrait, every photograph in the collection is about a child or has a child in it. Of course, the camera loves children. Still, Sutkus' photographs of children are not sentimental. They are, instead, genuinely affecting, and will leave one moved upon first encountering them. Through them, Sutkus captures everyday life in his beloved Lithuania with clarity of vision and profound empathy. That his work is well-served by the stunning reproduction standards of Slavitch Printing Moscow needs to be said. Recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize, Antanas Sutkus was one of the founders and President of the Photography Art Society of Lithuania (Lietuvos fotografijos meno draugija). His work is quietly subversive: "Working at the time when Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union, Sutkus focussed on black-and-white portraits of ordinary people in their everyday life rather than the model citizens and workers promoted by Soviet propaganda". One of the most wonderful photobook discoveries for our paradoxical time of plenty-yet-empty photography, "Man's essence coincides with his vision in a way that can be rendered in a photograph" (Raminta Jurenaite). An absolute "must-have" title for Antanas Sutkus collectors. This title is a contemporary photography classic. This is one of few copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with duotone plates. One of the finest photographers of our time. A fine copy. no.
