Paperback. Condizione: VG. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. Very nice clean copy. Kaleidoscopic Synthesis Peter Nagy Born seemingly whole from the belly of the beast, a school of painting has matured in Mumbai in the past ten years. Its roots are firmly planted in the media and cinema industries of the city with fertilization coming from European and American post-modern (read: quotational and ironically derivative) painting and the long traditions of garish visuality found throughout the Indian subcontinent. Much of this work has been labeled as Photo-Realist, a rather superficial reading of the aggressive images and robust paint handling that typifies much of the school's output, whose debts are equally to be found in Pop, Conceptual, Surreal and Expressionistic styles. While rampant degradations have flooded the galleries of India, the prime practitioners of this school have developed unique bodies of work with individual voices and pointed address. One such artist is Justin Ponmany, whose deployment of low-tech synthetic materials in tandem with imagery that speaks of technological conundrums results in curious artifacts that seem to be as much residual consumerist ciphers as they are Fine Art. The artist's signature material is a holographic pigment, used in tandem with paint and graphic reproduction techniques, that lends a chimerical quality to his canvases. Essentially colourless by nature the silvery holographic surface refracts light into rainbow prisms, resulting in works that change dramatically according to lighting conditions. Favoring low levels of illumination for his works, Ponmany presents paintings whose appearances oscillate with the viewer's vantage point, the images they harbor sliding in and out of view, at one moment hot and the next moment cool, a para-chromaticism similar to that found on the skins of certain electrolytic aquatic species. The figurative images or linguistic devices Ponmany suspends in these seductive tissues are chosen as much for their capricious meanings as their hyperbolic suggestivities. His phrases are capitalist incantations that extol both pomposity and vacuity; Ponmany's characters can seem either inertly commonplace or mythologically empowered. In any and all cases, the artist's talent is to pinpoint a zone, both visual and hermeneutic, where indecision resides comfortably with exhortation, where the slippery signifier cozies up with an inarticulate guffaw. 106 pages.
