Edition du Charme In-8, broché,premier plat ill remplié ( amant sous un arbre ), nombreuses aquarelles originales de Jylbert dont la finesse et la qualité ornementale dans le texte ne peut pas laisser indifférent- il s'agit de phototypies souvent érotiques tirées à part et coloriées au pochoir par les Ateliers Renson et fils, 195 pages sur velin teinté de Navarre.On déplore un accroc de trois mm sur le premier plat ainsi qu'un accroc plus minime sur la tranche sans manque, une fragilité à la jonction du premier plat et de la tranche de titre, l'ouvrage est par ailleurs en très belle condition, coins intègres, pas de ressaut des cahiers ou de fragilité des coutures des cahiers : Beau patrimoine en bon état. Excellent. Even overall toning. Size 14.25 x 10 Inches. This is an intriguing 1943 Jylbert pictorial map of Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. When this map was issued, France was occupied by Nazi Germany. As part of French Equatorial Africa, Gabon was opposed to the collaborationist Vichy Regime and allied with de Gaulle's Free French. A Closer Look Coverage embraces from the border with Camerout to the Nyagha River, incorporating Gabon and Guinée Espagnole (Equatorial Guinea). Libreville and Bata appear along the coast just above the center. Gabonese villages are illustrated as clusters of thatched huts in the midst of dense tropical foliage. Illustrations of Gabonese engaged in various activities appear alongside elephants, monkeys, and warriors. Stylized portraits of a Gabonese man and woman occupy the lower right, one of which holds a monkey. Gabon and French Colonization French interaction with the people of Gabon began in February 1839 when a mutual defensive and offensive alliance was signed between a French naval officer (representing the French government) and a Gabonese king. The first French fort was established in 1843, and after the French captured the Brazilian slave ship Elizia off the coast of Loango in 1849, the French established Libreville as a place for the formerly enslaved people to live. French explorers penetrated the Gabonese interior during the latter half of the 19th century, laying down treaties with indigenous communities. Gabon was declared part of the French colonial empire in July 1886. In 1910, Gabon became part of French Equatorial Africa, along with French Congo, Ubangi-Shari, and Chad. French Equatorial Africa existed until 1958, when Gabon requested admission to the French state as a formal department of France. The French government denied their application but granted Gabon independence on August 17, 1960. Gabon and World War II After the Fall of France in June 1940, Gabon was the only part of French Equatorial Africa that did not immediately rally to General Charles de Gaulle and Free France, instead loosely allying with the Vichy Regime. De Gaulle was irritated by Gabon's unwillingness to join the Free French because he wanted to use French Equatorial Africa as a base to attack Italian Libya. De Gaulle invaded Gabon from Douala, Cameroon on November 5, 1940. Libreville was captured on November 10, and Vichy forces surrendered without a fight at Fort Gentil on November 12. This map was part of a series of 20 maps of the French Empire drawn by Jylbert during the Nazi occupation of France to educate French schoolchildren on the wonders of the Empire and foster national pride. Trees fill the colony and impart ideas of a tropical land. The famous penal colony is not included. A Closer Look Coverage embraces French Guiana bounded on the west by the west by Surinam (Dutch Guiana) and the Maroni River and on the east by Brazil and the Oyapock River. Dense greenery throughout underscores the region's connection with the Amazon and its rich resources - mining, lumber, sugar plantations, and more. A portrait of two indigenous Guyanais adorns the bottom right. French Guiana During World War II After the Fall of France in June 1940, French Guiana's governor, Robert Chot, aligned the colony with the Vichy regime led by Philippe Pétain. A small anti-Vichy resistance formed, but as the Chot government became entrenched, most went underground. At this point, the United States was still neutral and tacitly supported the pro-Vichy government in French Guiana. In April 1941, Chot granted a parcel of land to the United States (specifically Pan American Airways) to build an airfield. This move proved unpopular in French Guiana, and Chot was removed and replaced by René Veber. Under Veber, the population became more hostile toward the Vichy, and on March 16 and 17, 1943, demonstrations caused by food shortages and anti-Vichy sentiment ousted the pro-Vichy government. American President Franklin D. Roosevelt did not like De Gaulle, so the U.S. pushed for the appointment of the Giraudist Jean Rapenne. Nonetheless, the Conseil Général fired Rapenne and replaced him with a Gaullist, Jean Surlemont, in November 1943.
