Löwith, vinculado intelectualmente a la teoría de la historia, al legado del idealismo hegeliano y al marxismo, y afectado políticamente por el impacto del nacionalsocialismo sobre los judíos alemanes, supo mostrar, en este libro clásico, que a pesar de las diferencias importantes entre Marx y Weber sus perspectivas sociológicas estaban sostenidas por una antropología filosófica convergente. Así, aunque las actitudes políticas de los dos pensadores eran diametralmente opuestas, compartían sin embargo un interés fundamental en el problema del «hombre» en el capitalismo burgués, del que ambos resaltaban sus aspectos negativos, y ambos se encaminaban hacia una «filosofía de la vida» común. Texto clave en las interpretaciones modernas del tema de la alienación en la teoría marxista y de la racionalización en la sociología de Weber, el análisis de Löwith de la antropología filosófica de la teoría y la sociología marxistas demuestra también que la disputa ideológica entre estas dos ramas de pensamiento es el resultado en buena parte de un malentendido mutuo.
