Dr. Kahn was one of the original Diplomates of the American Board of Surgery (1937) and of the American Board of Neurological Surgery (1940) and served as a member of the latter board from 1954 through 1960. He was a founding member of The Harvey Cushing Society and its president in 1954. He was also a member of the Society of Neurological Surgeons and served as its president in 1957. raleigh estate 4/26.

Gillett received his MD degree from the University of Michigan where he met Edgar Kahn. After receiving his degree "he then went to Wayne County Hospital in Detroit, where he became interested in orthopedic surgery. While at the U of M, Fred participated in a series of medical-military training programs. He entered the Army as a First Lieutenant in 1948 and was sent to Japan and later to South Korea. After 24 months of duty, Fred returned to U of M where he taught anatomy while continuing his education in general surgery. Fred and family came to Grand Rapids in 1951 and he set up a surgical practice. He was involved in improvement of hospital services and medical education. . . in a short time, he was named chairman of the surgery department at St. Mary's Hospital. Fred was active in and president of the Coller Society named for the head of surgery at the U of M under whom Fred trained while in Medical School. He was an Emeritus member of the Doran Foundation (a fund to provide medical scholarships) and was a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. The Gillett Surgical Education Fund which is part of the Doran Foundation was established in his and his father's name. Fred was always interested in furthering the education of surgeons in learning new techniques and practices" (an online obituary of Frederick Gillett MD). Signed by Author(s).

Each volume enclosed in a dust jacket with profuse text on pale terracotta paperstock. Text-volume presswork on substantial clay-coated glossy paper, making for very weighty tomes. There is a single instance of damage; both v.I's and v.II's djs were exposed to damp (spine panels only) with resultant dust-soil to their panels. No trace is noticeable in casings or text. The top rims of both are slightly rough also. Perfectly sound condition in every other respect, otherwise cleanly, and absolutely unmarked.
