Paperback. Condizione: New. Language: English. About The Book : Shakuntala, also known as The Recognition of Shakuntala and The Sign of Shakuntala is a Sanskrit play by the ancient Indian poet Kalidasa, dramatizing the story of Sakuntala. You will love this beautiful epic tale about a queen who loses an enchanted ring and is cur…sed to be forgotten by her husband. About The Author : Kalidasa (fl. 4th5th century CE) was a Classical Sanskrit author who is often considered ancient India's greatest poet and playwright. His plays and poetry are primarily based on the Vedas, the Ramaya?a, the Mahabharata and the Pura?as. His surviving works consist of three plays, two epic poems and two shorter poems. Much about his life is unknown except what can be inferred from his poetry and plays. His works cannot be dated with precision, but they were most likely authored before the 5th century CE. Sir William Jones FRS FRAS FRSE (28 September 174627 April 1794) was a British philologist, orientalist and a puisne judge on the Supreme Court of Judicature at Fort William in Bengal, and a scholar of ancient India. He is particularly known for his proposition of the existence of a relationship among European and Indo-Aryan languages, which later came to be known as the Indo-European languages. Jones is also credited for establishing the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784. William Jones was born in London; his father William Jones (16751749) was a mathematician from Anglesey in Wales, noted for introducing the use of the symbol ? The young William Jones was a linguistic prodigy, who in addition to his native languages English and Welsh, learned Greek, Latin, Persian, Arabic, Hebrew and the basics of Chinese writing at an early age. By the end of his life he knew eight languages with critical thoroughness, was fluent in a further eight, with a dictionary at hand, and had a fair competence in another twelve. Paperback. Condizione: New. Language: English. About the book:-The story of the drama Shakuntala is about the love affair of Shakuntala and Dushyanta. The plot is based upon love, secret marriage, separation of imprecation and reunion of immortal love of Dushyanta and Shakuntala. The theme of the drama is based on the Indian phi…losophy, "true love is immortal". Kalidasa has shown that while love leads to failure, kindness reaches the completion. The curse plays a vital role which makes Dushyanta to forget everything about Shakuntala. But the supreme form of love is the serene that was sharply followed and got succeeded by Shakuntala. Kalidasa concludes this drama with declaration of Shakuntala's life is a creation of factual love and external beauty that determined true love is immortal. Shakuntala, based on a story from the Mahabharata, represents the high point of ancient Indian drama. The themes of purity of love and patient acceptance of the will of the gods are characteristic of the genre. This drama, Sir William Jones' translation of Kalidasa's play, was first published in Calcutta, followed by European republications in 1790, 1792 and 1796. He, along with Henry Thomas Colebrooke and Nathaniel Halhed, founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784.
