In hoeverre zijn de vaders van nu betrokken bij de opvoeding van hun kinderen en leveren ze een bijdrage aan het huishouden? De laatste hoofdstukken gaan over de (in)stabiliteit van relaties. Er wordt uitvoerig stilgestaan bij scheiding, een fenomeen dat het einde van veel hedendaagse relaties markeert. De auteurs hebben gekozen voor een wijze van benaderen die het doelgericht handelen centraal stelt. Die benadering kan men als variatie op "de calculerende burger" met de term "calculerende partner" aanduiden. In deze optiek is de calculerende partner geen geïsoleerde individualist, maar iemand die de voor en nadelen van afhankelijkheid tegen elkaar afweegt bij het aangaan van persoonlijke relaties.
