Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Illustrated Throughout (illustratore). Pictorial boards, 380 pages, illustrations (some colour); 34 cm. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Dust jacket with a slightly faded spine. Another copy available. OVERSIZE! Additional shipping charges may be requested for international & priority orders. Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "A group of young artists in 1874, in opposition to the established authority of the Salon and the Academy, decided to show their work directly to the public in an exhibition which they organized themselves. The artist forming the core of this group - Pissarro, Degas, Sisley, Cazanne, Monet, Renoir and Moriset - came to be known as "the Impressionists." Seen to be following the independent spirit of Manet, they were immediately identified as the Avant-garde and their first exhibition became an historic landmark in the development of modern art. We now tend to see the landscapes of Impressionist paintings as perfect images of nature. It is easy to overlook their startling and fragmented appearance at the time they were painted. The documents in this book show how the paintings looked to contemporary eyes: to both the critics and the artists. Some of the criticism these paintings received is almost as famous as the works themselves, and several important documents appear here in English translation for the first time. The book tells the story of the personal struggles, debates, problems and solutions involved in a new way of painting that quickly led in unforeseen directions and took enormous risks with the traditional means of representing the world in art. These experiences are revealed in the letters and recorded comments of the artists themselves, and in the writings of friends and contemporary critics, many of whom, such as Baudelaire, Zola, Valery, Mallarme, Huysman, Laforgue and Mirbeau, were also novelists and poets. The continuing interpretation of Impressionism within the changing art and art criticism of the twentieth century is examined through the writings of artists such as Leger, Kandinsky, Masson, Matisse and Hofmann as well as recent critics, philosophers and art historians including Meyer Schapiro, Gaston Bachelard, Clement Greenberg and Lawrence Gowing." - Publisher. The artists forming the core of this group~Pissarro, Degas, Sisley, Cezanne, Monet, Renoir and Morisot~ came to be known as the "Impressionists." Seen to be following the independent spirit of Manet, they were immediately identified as the avant~garde and their exhibition became an historic landmark in the development of modern art. Today we tend to see the landdscapes of Impressionist paintings as perfect images af nature, but when they were painted the appearance af these canvases was startling and seemed radical to many critics and other contemporary artists. Then, in 1910, the critic Roger Fry organized an exhibition at the Grafton Galleries, London, of avant~garde painting which included works by Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Matisse. This exhibition became as important a landmark in the official histories of modern art as the Armory Show in America. The featured artists did not belong to a single unified movement defined or recognized at the time, and Fry, unsure how to label the exhibition, and losing patience at the last minute, said, "Oh , let's just call them Post~Impressionists; at any rate, they came after the Impressionists. " But "'Post~Impressionism" was not a name which Van Gogh, Gauguin, Seurat or any of the artists of the period would have applied to themselves. This was a period of reexamination, of moving past certain aspects of Impressionism and of coming to grips with the isolation that avant~garde art had imposed on the individual artist. It was a period in which the Impressionist emphasis on the construction of painting purely by means of color had left artists with the question of how basic form related to their own feelings and to nature. The Impressionists and Their Legacy, a joining of The Impressionists: A Retrospective and The Post~Impressionists: A Retrospective, tells the story of how the personal struggles, debates, problems and solutions that arose when new ways of painting developed quickly led in unforeseen directions and challenged the traditional means of representing the world through art. The documents in this book ~letters and recorded comments by the artists themselves, as well as selections by notable contemporaries incuding Baudelaire, Zola, Valery, Mallarme , Huysmans, Laforgue and Proust~show how artists and critics during and in the aftermath of Impressionism did describe themselves: how they responded to tradition, to each other and to the kaleidoscope of the contemporary scene. The ever~expanding interpretation of Impressionsim and its legacy within the changing world o.
