Ruesch trained in medicine at the University of Zurich and went on to a distinguished career at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute of the University of California, San Francisco; he is best known to historians of psychiatry and communication theory for his collaboration with Gregory Bateson on "Communication: The Social Matrix of Psychiatry" (1951), a foundational text of the Palo Alto group on communication and family systems.
