Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The College of Staten Island's history is rooted in service to the borough of Staten Island. The only tax-funded college in this New York City borough, the school serves over 10,000 students annually. The college is one of 26 City University of New York campuses and one of the university's 11 upper-division colleges. A 1932 petition campaign for public higher education on Staten Island was followed by decades of activism before Staten Island Community College opened to offer associate degrees in 1956. Later, demand for bachelor degree programs led to the 1967 opening of upper-division Richmond College. In 1976, during a fiscal crisis, the schools consolidated into the College of Staten Island. In 1993, the college moved to a historic campus, the former site of Halloran General Hospital and Willowbrook State School. The college has a distinctive tradition of serving first-generation college students with diverse ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, and immigration identities as well as nontraditional students and people with developmental, learning, and physical disabilities.James A. Kaser has been the archivist at the College of Staten Island since 2002 and a full professor since 2009. This is his sixth book. Dr. Kaser is a bibliographer and cultural historian with a doctorate in American culture studies. He has selected images from archival collections documenting the College of Staten Island and its predecessor institutions to illustrate this book, which traces the history of public higher education on Staten Island. Paperback. Condizione: New. The story of a 19th century Staten Island town that nurtured the careers of nationally significant reformers, abolitionists, and transcendentalists. This book traces five decades of community life in a nineteenth-century Staten Island neighborhood informally called Elliottville, where extraordinary people lived. Its history illuminates the impact of transformative cultural, social, economic, and political change stemming from abolitionism, transcendentalism, the women's suffrage movement, and the rapid growth of the nation. Begun in 1839 as a therapeutic retreat, New Englanders with ties to Emerson settled there, forming a distinctive community. Their achievements in art, literature, and social reform attracted even more like-minded people, including Francis George Shaw, George William Curtis, Theodore Winthrop, Robert Gould Shaw, Helena de Kay Gilder, Charles de Kay, Anna Leonowens, and Maria "Midy" Morgan. Its vibrant intellectual life was threatened by an influx of Gilded Age men in the 1870s and destroyed when a freight rail line separated Elliottville from the Kill Van Kull. Drawing on a wealth of archival material and unique maps and illustrations, this book gives a vivid picture of how one small community could impact the country's intellectual and social development.…

Condizione: Wie Neu. Zustandsbeschreibung: Mängelexemplar/near mint. History, Politics, and the Battle of Chickamauga. Utilizing battle accounts by members of the Twenty-first Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry and contrasting them with published histories of the battle, this study analyzes how personal memories of the battle were subsumed in the creation of a cultural myth driven by the political necessity of reunifying the country. Reinterpretations of the Civil War current in the 1880s and 1890s often included discussion of the Battle of Chickamauga. In retrospect, the battle was seen as a victory by both sides and was used to promote the popular theme that Union and Confederate soldiers had been equally noble and heroic. To aid in reconciliation, highly publicized reunions of Confederate and Union veterans were held on the battlefield and, in 1895, the ground was dedicated as the country's first national military park, becoming a commemorative landscape promoting reunification.
