Melancholia,…als Begriff genommen, hat hier nichts gemein mit alledem, was im 19. Jahrhundert zuerst von Dichtern als Weltschmerz, dann von Denkern als Pessimismus behandelt worden war. Melancholia istviel eher verwandt jener, die im Stich Albrecht Dürers zum Ausdruck kommt. In der Melancholia ist Rudolf Kassner aus seiner Jugend herausgetreten; es darf von ihr gesagt werden, daß sie im Keime das spätere Werk enthält. Das Buch ist 1906 begonnen, im Todesjahr seines Vaters. 1907 ist das Werk in Rom in glücklichenWochen, später inVallom-brosa beendet worden. Nach dem Erscheinen im Frühjahr 1908 ist der Dichter reisend über ein Jahr unserem Kontinent ferngeblieben, so daß er nichts über die unmittelbare Wirkung auf eine zerstreute Leserwelt im deutschen Sprachgebiet zu berichten weiß. Er hat es Chamberlain und Hofmannsthal noch vorgelesen; Rilke hat, nach seinen Briefen zu schließen, vor Freunden zu wiederholten Malen das gleiche getan.
