The author details the SIMA Program, an initiative spearheaded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), aimed at streamlining information exchange within the manufacturing domain. Using the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), the author constructs a virtual manufacturing scenario that allows readers to explore a multi-dimensional world, encompassing everything from conventional machine shops to high-volume assembly lines. Through this unique approach, the author illuminates the complex processes behind the integration of design, planning, and production systems, emphasizing the need for standardized data formats and protocols. The book delves into various aspects of this complex system, including the role of product data management, scheduling, and the impact of virtual reality on the manufacturing landscape. The book's insights on the critical role of standardization and information exchange in optimizing manufacturing processes provide valuable lessons for those seeking to understand the challenges and opportunities of this evolving field.
