Winter of the American humorist, Marietta Holley (1836 - 1926) who created Samantha and Josiah Allen, which comic characters were hugely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Samantha was introduced as "Josiah Allen's Wife", but both characters inhabit her stories equally. This is the First Edition hardcover, published by Syracuse University Press in 1984. The following is excerpted from the dust-jacket : |> From 1873 to 1914 humorist Marietta Holley was one of America's most popular writer. She created one of our most endearing characters - Samantha - and made "Josiah Allen's Wife" a household phrase. Her twenty-one novels and numerous short stories earned for her the title "the female Mark Twain". |> Along with other famous Central New York woman's rights activists such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, she spoke to her substantial audience about the injustices and indignities of women's place in society. She was sought out by leading feminists to speak on temperance and voting issues and was even asked to address the United States Congress on women's rights. |> But, as Winter demonstrates in this first book-length work on Holley's life and writings, her Samantha stories also chronicle the homely events and hard work that set the rhythm of life for country women.
