Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Marietta Holley, Life with "Josiah Allen's Wife" is the biography by Kate H. Winter of the American humorist, Marietta Holley (1836 - 1926) who created Samantha and Josiah Allen, which comic characters were hugely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Samantha was introduced as "Josiah Allen's Wife", but both characters inhabit her stories equally. This is the First Edition hardcover, published by Syracuse University Press in 1984. The following is excerpted from the dust-jacket : |> From 1873 to 1914 humorist Marietta Holley was one of America's most popular writer. She created one of our most endearing characters - Samantha - and made "Josiah Allen's Wife" a household phrase. Her twenty-one novels and numerous short stories earned for her the title "the female Mark Twain". |> Along with other famous Central New York woman's rights activists such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, she spoke to her substantial audience about the injustices and indignities of women's place in society. She was sought out by leading feminists to speak on temperance and voting issues and was even asked to address the United States Congress on women's rights. |> But, as Winter demonstrates in this first book-length work on Holley's life and writings, her Samantha stories also chronicle the homely events and hard work that set the rhythm of life for country women. They clearly depict the realities and rigors of the ceaseless toil of farm life and unending domestic trials as well as the spirit and turmoil of life in a small New York town. Drawing upon a variety of literary traditions, Marietta Holley fashioned a new kind of vernacular fiction, one which borrowed from the past to promote the new and the yet to be. Said Samantha in one story : "I never contended that wimmin was perfect, far from it - But justice is what I have been contendin' for; justice and equal rights, and a fair dividin' of the burdens of life is my theme." <| I'll only list a few of Holley's works (Many of these use considerble dialect in speech and spellin'.) : * Around the World with Josiah Allen's Wife" * Josiah Allen on the Woman Question * Lament of the Mormon Wife * My Opinions and Betsy Bobbet's - Designed as a Beacon Light, To guide Women to Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, But which May Be read by Members of the Sterner Sect, Without Injury to Themselves or The Book * Samantha Among the Brethren * Samantha at Coney Island and a Thousand Other Islands * Samantha at Saratoga, or Flirtin' with Fashion * Samantha at the World's Fair * Samantha on the Race Problem * Samantha Vs Josiah: Being the Story of the Borrowed Automobile and What became of It * Samantha in Europe * My Wayward Pardner, or My Trials with Josiah, the Widow Bump, and Etcetery TITLE : Marietta Holley, Life with "Josiah Allen's Wife AUTHOR : Kate H.
