In this study, Käte Hamburger offers a new thesis to explain why those Greek figures, and certain ones in particular, have remained subjects for reinterpretation. She is precise in defining the figures themselves, not the themes, as the subject of her study. Her purpose is not merely to recognize the reinterpretation as such but to investigate the germ, often hidden, in the Greek model that may have produced the modern version. The book is based on a series of lectures and does not aim to be inclusive. Dr. Hamburger is concerned primarily with contemporary plays, and, although many additional works are discussed, she finds in the following plays the most significant modern reinterpretations: Sartres The Flies, Girau- douxs Electra, Hauptmanns Iphigenia, Wilders Alcestiad, Brauns Medea, and Anouilhs Antigone. These plays are central to her thesis both because as reinterpretations they have shaped a modern consciousness of the figures and also because the models from which they are drawn allow for different points of view. Thus she believes Giraudoux can interpret Electra as one who wills to live and does so without violence to his model and with expression of a prevalent modern theme. Oedipus, on the other hand, one of the most powerful of Sophocles figures, is too completely realized and too entirely defined by prophesy and by his insistence upon truth to allow for meaningful reinterpretation.
